Weekly Message for 8.9.19
Happy weekend, Moore Square! We would like to thank all the families who joined us for our Open House on Thursday. Hopefully you found the evening informative and helpful. If you still have specific questions for staff, please call the school or email the teachers. We greatly appreciate the PTSA for providing snacks for the staff on Thursday, allowing everyone to be their best for the evening.
General Announcements
Fall pictures will be taken on Tuesday, August 13th. All students will have their pictures taken as they will appear in the yearbook. Pictures can be purchased online or in person on the day of pictures. Please do not send money or checks to the school prior to picture day. Picture proofs will be given to all students who do not prepay to allow for ordering after the pictures are taken. We are still in need of volunteers to support picture day. Please consider giving a small part of your day. Those who do help will receive a discount on school pictures. The volunteer sign-up can be found here.
North Carolina law requires that all 7th grade students must have the Tdap and Meningococcal immunizations within the first 30 days of the school year. Your child can receive these immunizations at their regular doctor or at your local Wake County Human Services location. Please bring a printed record to the school as proof that your student received these vaccinations. If you have any questions, please call the school.
All parents are encouraged to register as a volunteer. It only takes a few minutes at school and registration is required for parents to attend field trips and volunteer in classrooms, the media center and the office. Before too long, teachers will be asking for support to deliver the robust programs that Moore Square has for students. As a reminder, volunteer registration must be done each year and you can connect your name to more than one school. So, the next time you are at school, ask Ms. Scott at the front office about registering.
Looking for an opportunity to volunteer? Moore Square will be hosting Career Day 2019 on the morning of Friday, September 27th. We would be honored to have you come share your career journey with our students or participate in our "Mock Interview" session to help our students develop those soft skills necessary for success!
This event is for 6th, 7th and 8th graders. Exposure to a vast variety of careers during these developing years is so important. Students often begin shaping their dreams and ideas into course selections at this time.
Moore information and registration can be found here. Please contact our CDC, Wendy Gressett at wgressett@wcpss.net or by calling the main office at 919.664.5737 with any questions.
Moore Square is seeking new mentors for students this year. The mentoring program connects adults with students to support not just academic development but navigating the challenges of early adolescence and social/emotional learning. Mentors meet with mentees on a weekly or every other week basis for 30-45 minutes during the school day. If interested in mentoring a Moore Square student, please contact Marla Mondora at 919.664.5737 or mmondora@wcpss.net. No experience is necessary.

Students will need to be picked up at Ligon at 4:30. See Mr. Scheck if you have any questions.
Future Moore Square Art Project--Collecting Materials Now
We are planning for another mosaic--this time using plastic bottle caps. In preparation for this, we are asking families to collect plastic bottle caps and send them to school with your child. Examples of what to send are water and juice bottle caps, milk jug caps, or any flat plastic caps. Caps can be up to several inches in diameter, but smaller caps are preferable. We anticipate the need for a variety of colors, though a design for the mosaic has not been determined. Students are encouraged to place their bottle caps in bins in the cafeteria as well, and in the lobby. Students may bring bottle caps to Ms. Hardy, Magnet Coordinator in room 1123.
PLEASE MAKE SURE THE CAPS YOU TURN IN ARE CLEAN! Thanks for your support!
Counseling and Student Services News
Moore Square has a school-wide strategy for helping all students achieve important social, behavioral, and learning goals. Tier 1 Supports formerly Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS) is implemented at Moore Square to promote and maximize academic achievement and behavioral competence.
As part of the program, we have established several clear rules for the behaviors we expect in all areas of our school. We have explicitly taught and will continue to reteach those expectations to the students and reward them frequently with ROAR Tickets, positive notes, and privileges for their great behavior. The expectations for all student behavior will be clear throughout our building and cafeteria, gymnasium, and classrooms. You will be able to ask your child, “What are the rules in your school?” “How do you follow those rules?” “What happens when a teacher sees you following the rules?”
The acronym, ROAR, is used to convey these expectations. The letters stand for Respect Everyone and Everything, Own Your Actions, Achieve Your Goals, and Remain Safe.
The approach to managing behaviors is also a positive one. Students are acknowledged for exhibiting the behaviors that we expect by receiving a ROAR Ticket. They can redeem the ROAR Tickets for various privileges and for items in their classrooms. We will apply consistent consequences and positive reinforcement for all kids. By detailing every expected behavior and teaching to kids in a positive way, we will provide a common language for everyone in our building, including students and staff.
Please take this opportunity to talk to your child about the expectations at school and the importance of continuing to demonstrate ROAR behaviors. With your continued support and involvement, Moore Square Middle School will remain a school where students can excel. In order to help reinforce ROAR behaviors, we will select target behaviors to focus on for a week. For the week of August 12th-16th, the focus will be on Respecting Everyone and Everything in all areas. Make sure you showcase your best Respectful behavior.
