Weekly Message for 8.21.18
The light is at the end of the of the tunnel…or Fall Break is near. We have received official and final confirmation of our Hurricane Florence Make-Up days. We will be in school on Monday and Tuesday. We will also have a full day of school on October 19th, not an early release day. Students will receive 1st quarter report cards on Tuesday.
Speaking of grades, do you have access to Home Base? Home Base is a statewide student information system that gives parents and students access to real-time information, including attendance, grades and assignments. With Home Base, powered by PowerSchool's application, everyone stays connected: Students stay on top of assignments, parents can participate in their child's progress, and teachers can instantly share information from their gradebook with parents and students.
If you have questions about accessing or navigating your account, please contact the school. We will have the parent request forms available at the front desk. Additionally, our office staff will walk you through logging in if you need help.
As our 2018-19 recruitment season approaches, we would like to add to our Moore Square Magnet Middle School website a place for prospective families to read about some of the wonderful things our parents and students have to say about our school. If you have a positive testimonial you would like to share, please click the appropriate link below and complete the Google form. (If you have an area of concern, this is not the platform. PLEASE contact us so we can work to address it!)
We would like a brief description--just a few sentences targeting a specific area of which you have been especially pleased. Examples could include a particular department, activity, or event, but you are not limited to these topics! We ask that you do not use specific names of teachers and/or staff in your testimonial.
The number of responses we receive will help determine whether we publish your testimonial on our website, but many positive testimonials will definitely speak volumes to our interested families.
Thank you very much for your positive feedback!
8th Graders: The Early College Fair is Saturday, October 13th at Vernon Malone College and Career Academy from 9am-11am. Early College High Schools help students get a head start on college while they earn their high school diploma. This is your chance to explore all the early college high school options. The address is 2200 S Wilmington St. in Raleigh.
Also, the early college application period starts Saturday, October 13th. Here is more information about applying to an Early College.
Teachers are planning several off-campus experiences for the students and will need parent chaperones. If you have not yet updated your volunteer registration, please stop by school and complete the registration. Volunteer registration must be updated every school year. Many school experiences would not be possible if it were not for parent volunteers!
Calling all creative Moore Square Students. How do you see “Heroes Around Me”? It’s time for the annual PTA Reflections Art Contest. Entries will be accepted in six different categories: visual arts, literature, photography, dance choreography, music composition and film production. This week your student received a Reflections interest form. Submissions will be due in October, and the winners will move on to the Wake County competition. All participants will be celebrated at Moore Square’s First Friday event in November. We want to see your creative approach to this year’s theme “Heroes Around Me”!
The Moore Square Mentoring Program is looking for volunteers to serve as a mentor to a student. If you are interested in mentoring a student, please contact Marla Mondora by phone at 919.664.5737 ext. 26631 or by email at mmondora@wcpss.net. Mentors meet with their students once a week or every other week for about 30 minutes. Experience is not necessary.
Parents are reminded to follow carpool procedures during both morning drop off and afternoon pick up. In the morning, students are expected to exit their car as soon as it reaches the fire hydrant. This will help with keep traffic flowing. In the afternoon, students should be looking for their cars and listening for their numbers to be called. We are also asking parents to not block the drives of nearby businesses and churches. Finally, please do not park in the lots surrounding campus that are marked as monthly account lots. We want to continue to be good neighbors.
Construction updates: Construction is moving along, sometimes at a snail’s pace, but moving along. You will find occasions where the barriers are down on the curb lane on Person Street. These occasions will be intermittent, and we ask that parents are alert and aware to the changing traffic patterns. If the barriers are up, please do not line up on Person Street as this will block traffic.
Students currently enrolled in Math 2 received a letter a couple weeks ago about the PSAT. Students in Math 2 are eligible to take the PSAT on October 10th. There is no make-up day for the PSAT. If your student intends to take the test, (s)he must pay the $16 fee prior to the day of the test. Checks should be made payable to Moore Square with PSAT in the subject line.
