Weekly Message for 3.2.18
Happy March! We are a little over 1 week until Spring Break. This is a reminder that Monday, March 12th, is an inclement weather make-up day.
Events of Last Week: Last week was an exciting week for Moore Square. We learned on Monday that we will be recognized by Magnet Schools of America as a Magnet School of Excellence, the organization’s highest honor, at the Magnet Schools of America conference later this spring.
Congratulations to 8th grader Leslie Kramer. Leslie will represent Moore Square and Wake County at the State Competition this spring. She will be vying for a spot in the National Geography Bee. Good luck Leslie!
Mr. Hunter and the Odyssey of the Mind teams participated on Saturday at the OM Competition. This is a culmination of several weeks of preparation and practice, both during the day and after school. The P5 team placed 5th in the competition. Team members are Randy Clinton, Katie Scarborough, Dylan Quinn, Abby Kummerer, Louis Huler, Duncan Earl, and Christopher Hill. The P2 team placed snd in the competition. Team members are Avery Sweet, Emily Parris, Nicholas Balthazar, Zachary Quinn and Austin Dolan. Congratulations to Mr. Hunter and all the teams! We would also like to thank the parent volunteers who worked alongside the teams this year. Without your time and support Mr. Hunter would have certainly gone nuts!
Several of our 6th grade students traveled to Biogen for a day of hands on learning. More groups will be going this week.
The 8th graders participated in the Reality of Money Simulation on Friday. Each student was given a career and income that they learned the education requirements and learned how to live on a budget. Thank you to all the volunteers who helped make the event meaningful for our students.
Thank you to the Magnet Men for feeding the staff on Friday. Everyone raved about the chili bar!
Construction News: Construction is underway. By now I am certain most of you have seen the fencing and barricades on Person Street. The lane used to stage carpool is blocked off as is the bottom part of the school parking lot. Please be patient when lining up for carpool and be certain not to line up on Martin Street until after the buses depart (at approximately 2:20). Remind your students to be looking for their rides so we can keep carpool moving quickly.
School Security: Maintaining a safe learning environment is a responsibility our entire community shares. We encourage students to report to an adult any information they hear or see that can impact the safety of the school. Additionally, we want to remind everyone that our doors are locked during the school day and all visitors must ring the doorbell and be buzzed in. We will ask all visitors their purpose for coming to the school. Parents, please know that safety and security are our primary goals and that the questions our office staff ask are to help ensure the safety of our students. Additionally, students are reminded to not open an exterior door to let a visitor in the building. This includes people the students are familiar with. Thank you for helping us maintain a safe learning environment.
PBIS: To help reinforce ROAR behaviors as well as giving out and receiving ClassDojo points, PBIS will select target behaviors to focus on for a week. For the week of March 5th-9th, the focus will be on Respecting Everyone and Everything by Watching our Tone of Voice when speaking and Language. Points given for watching our tone of voice and our language will have a value of 5 points instead of the usual 1 point next week.
ROAR Week is next week and as a treat we will play music during lunch. You can choose to have the song of your choice played for 10 Dojo points. You can start signing up with Mrs. Estes during lunch on Monday. We will end the week with the ROAR Assembly and battle for the Spirit Stick.
For the week of February 26th-March 2nd, the focus will be on Remaining Safe during Hallway Transitions. Points given for following hallway transitions will have a value of 5 points instead of the usual 1 point next week.
Spirit Week: Spirit Week concludes on Monday with Pajama Day. All students are encouraged to wear school appropriate pajamas on Monday.
Afterschool Activities: The Realms of Myth Club meets on Monday. FBLA and the Garden Club meets on Tuesday. National Junior Honor Society meets on Thursday during lunch. Be the Man and 6th grade Math Tutoring meets on Thursday afterschool. The Comix Club meets on Friday.
