Congratulations Ms. Elizabeth Gary, 2021-22 Teacher of the Year!
Southeast Raleigh Magnet High School is PROUD to recognize Ms. Elizabeth Gary as our 2021-2022 Teacher of the Year! Please enjoy her words of wisdom--her "Why" for teaching, below:
Twenty-six years ago, I was called to educate, motivate, and direct the pathways of young people. I believe that every child is capable of learning and deserves to feel the love of those who play a role in shaping their future. As educators, we must be willing to help them discover their “Why.” Some come to us wearing a facade. And we may be one of the few safe havens and bright spots in their lives.
When I get to know my students, I not only see their individuality, but I begin to meet them where they are. I take a personal interest in their development. It is easy to pour into some while for others, I must be willing to dig a little deeper.

I am thankful for experiencing the love of those educators who were willing to go the extra step to believe in me when I wasn’t sure that I believed in myself. Little did I know they were watering my spirit. My babies--as I affectionately call my students--refer to me as “Momma Gary,” “Auntie Gary,” “Mrs. Liz,” “Coach Gary,” or “Mrs. Gary.” Some ask if they can become one of my school sons or daughters, while others just assume the role. When people ask how many kids I have; I usually respond with around 1600.
I am comfortable with educating, laughing, crying, or giving unsolicited advice. My parents know that they can call on me at any given time and for any reason. My motto is: “It Takes A Village To Raise A Child.” My colleagues know that I will lend a hand whenever and wherever needed. My weakness is saying no, but God gives you the strength for the assignments that you have been given.
"My motto is: 'It Takes A Village To Raise A Child.'"
A couple of years ago, I was asked by my administration to expand my love. And, my outlook on life and education changed in the most unimaginable way! What a joy it is to experience love and excitement at the end of every day...to be made to feel that everyday is the best day.
In addition to teaching, I am currently serving as PLT Leader for the Healthful Living Department; Case Manager for the Intervention Team; founder and participant of a new after-school program called Aiming High; and as an Academic Advisor for the Men’s Basketball Program.
I have received numerous awards throughout my teaching and coaching career, including:
- The Healthful Living Community Service Award
- WCPSS “Thank A Teacher” top 10 finalist recognition from over 2500 nominations
- Co-Presenter for the NCAAHPERD Statewide Convention
