Welcome from Principal Summers

February 1, 2019

Greetings Green Level Community,

My name is Karen Summers and I am excited to introduce myself as the new Principal of Green Level High School.

High school is a memorable time in a student’s life, and it is an honor to embark on this new journey with you to open the new Green Level High School. I look forward to making this year a story for the history books. Over the next several months, I am eager to meet and partner with you and the school community.

First, a little about me.  For more than 21 years, I have worked in WCPSS as a school administrator. I received a bachelor’s degree in special education from the University of North Florida and a master’s degree in education at the University of Georgia. Most recently, I served as the Principal of Green Hope High School. During my tenure at Green Hope, we received numerous state and national awards for our academic, athletic, performing and visual arts, and extracurricular achievements.  I am equally proud about our purposeful intentions to visibly and openly promote an inclusive school learning environment for a diverse student body spanning 70+ different countries of origin and 60+ languages.

My husband and I lived in Cary for over 15 years. In fact, we resided in the attendance area for Green Level High School until May of 2018!  Our two daughters attended Highcroft Elementary, Mills Park Elementary, Davis Drive Middle and graduated from Green Hope High School in 2017.

As we begin to frame the vision for Green Level High School, I am committed to building an inviting and inclusive environment for all learners. Recognizing the importance of positive relationships, I will promote a school culture that values relationships as much as the academic content that we will impart to students.

I aspire to create a school community that is student-centered and filled with relevant, engaging, and empowering learning experiences for our eminently diverse student population – both inside and outside the classroom. As an educator, I believe fervently in cultivating this generation’s authenticity, raw power, and seemingly limitless potential by creating opportunities that will benefit them now and in the future. This is what we will strive to do for each student every day at Green Level.

Green Level students will benefit from a challenging and rigorous academic environment. We are proud to open our school with a wide variety of courses to meet the unique needs and interests of all students.  Students will have many enrichment opportunities in the first year. Because extracurricular activities are so critical to a positive student culture, I’m excited to announce that we’ve already made one important hire:

Colin Fegeley, Athletic Director: Mr. Fegeley received his bachelor's degree in History from North Carolina State University and his master's degree in Education from the University of Pennsylvania. Mr. Fegeley is a member of the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association and is a Certified Athletic Administrator (CAA).  Under his leadership, Green Hope High School has continued to earn 9 consecutive Wells Fargo Cups for the best 4A Athletic Program in the State of North Carolina.  Additionally, Max Preps recognized Green Hope High School as the best high school athletic program in the U.S. for the past two consecutive years.

Mr. Fegeley cannot wait to meet all the future Green Level student athletes and looks forward to building what will one day be North Carolina’s premiere athletic program.  To stay up to date with athletic information, please follow our Twitter account at @G_L_ATHELTICS.

The best part of opening a new high school is the unique opportunity it provides students for leadership starting in their freshman and sophomore years. Your child’s leadership will be critical in establishing our school culture and leaving a legacy for years to come. To make sure that they have every opportunity to shape our school’s legacy, I will be providing information via Twitter (@GreenlevelHighSchool) and our website: www.wcpss.net/GreenLevelHS. Please check for updates on upcoming hires, events and student opportunities.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us!

With warmest of regards,

Karen Summers
