Happy New Year!

Hello West Lake Families,

I hope that you have had a relaxing, healthy holiday break! Hopefully, you all had a chance to spend time with family and friends, catch up on some much needed rest, and enjoy the calmness of not rushing to school!

As I reflect on this past year and look forward, I want each of you to know how thankful I am for you. I am grateful to have the opportunity to lead in a school where students are truly placed first above all! Our teachers and staff give of their time to ensure that our children are well-prepared, loved, and challenged. I thank them and you for ensuring that our students feel loved and have their academic, social, and emotional needs met. Your partnership is undoubtedly the key to your child's success.

This is a great time to review expectations and renew high standards. Modeling for your children how to set goals, track them, and celebrate when you achieve them is a theme for the new year. Over the next few weeks, your students will be encouraged to set an academic and personal goal. Our staff will model this process as well. A great goal would be to complete a Science Fair Project. We are having the biggest Science Fair in the history of the school this year on February 19/20! You can find more information on our website: https://www.wcpss.net/westlakees I encourage you to support your student in participating.

Speaking of goals, our students met the goal for the Readvolution challenge issued by WCPSS and the Carolina Hurricanes by reading 2020 books this past fall. We were one of 9 schools throughout the district selected for a "Schoolwide" field trip to the PNC Arena to watch the Carolina Hurricanes practice and participate in special activities. When we announced that we were selected, you could hear the cheers of your children throughout the hallways! Meeting goals should be celebrated! There will be more information to come regarding this trip!

We have much work to do to prepare each child for the next grade, but we have time to make great things happen! Thank you for encouraging your child to read nightly, practice math facts, and discuss their learning from the day. West Lake Elementary is going to experience its best year ever in 2020!

Welcome back!

Yours,

Kelly Wilson, Principal
