5/20 Principal Message

Mt. Vernon Parents/Guardians,

I can’t believe it, but we are three weeks away from finishing the 2018/19 school year. It has been a great year together so far, but we have a lot of work to do over these next three weeks.

We will begin testing on May 29. It is important for all of us to have conversations with our students on trying their best on the End of Grade assessments (EOGs) and the North Carolina Final Exams (NCFEs). As a reminder, 6th-grade students will be taking both the Math and Reading EOG only. 7th-grade students will be taking the Math and Reading EOGs and the SS and Science NCFEs. Our 8th-grade students will be taking the Math, Reading and Science EOGs and the SS NCFE. Finally, our Booster students will be taking the Math, Reading and Science EOGs. The schedule for testing is as follows:

  • Wednesday, May 29: Math EOG
  • Thursday, May 30: Reading EOG
  • Friday, May 31: EOG Makeup day
  • Monday, June 3: Science EOG and NCFE
  • Tuesday, June 4: Social Studies NCFE
  • Wednesday, June 5: EOG and NCFE Makeup day

The only true “Test Prep” that we would like our students to do for this testing period is to get a good night sleep. It is so important that our students are well-rested for these exams to demonstrate the growth that they have made this year. Mt. Vernon will be providing a hot breakfast for all students on these days.

On the evening of Wednesday, May 22, Mt. Vernon will be holding our #TrueBookFAIR event again. Please come on out for dinner and literacy. This is a wonderful opportunity to pick up books for your children (not just our Mt. Vernon babies!!) for the summer. Your child brought home information on how to RSVP this past Friday. Dinner begins at 6:00pm. Go Mt. Vernon’s website for more information.

Our end of year celebration dates and times have been scheduled. We would love to see as many families here as possible to celebrate the 2018/19 school year and to celebrate the arrival of summer.

  • 8th-grade and Boosters Celebration: Monday, June 10: 11:00am
  • 6th/7th-grade Celebration: Monday, June 10: 1:30pm

Please continue monitoring your child’s MAV Sheet nightly. This behavior management system serves to provide immediate positive feedback to our students while addressing areas in need of improvement. At times, the MAV sheets will also contain important pieces of information for you and your family.
