Jets Parents,

Happy New Year! I wish you and your family well in the coming year. Though we are tracked out until January 25, I do have a couple of things to share with you today. The regular, weekly Principal Posts will resume on Sunday, January 24.

Year-Round and Magnet Application Deadline is January 28

If you are interested in applying for year-round or magnet schools, the deadline is January 28. If your base school is a traditional calendar school, but you have a rising kindergarten sibling, please make sure you register at your base school and apply for BCES by the deadline. For questions regarding registration for the 21-22 school year, please contact our Data Manager, Mark Flynn, at

Rising 6th graders can apply for a year-round or magnet middle school as well. If you are interested in learning more about your magnet options for middle school, the Magnet Middle School Mini Fair will be held on Thursday, Jan. 14 from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Register HERE.

Help Needed

Many of you have asked over the last year, “What can I do to help?” Well, the answer is, become a substitute teacher! Our biggest need for help right now is to have a pool of reliable substitute teachers. When teachers have to be out for a half- or full-day, without a substitute, their duties are assigned to another staff member, increasing the workload on staff tremendously and sometimes causing changes to the schedule. What a relief it would be to teachers and staff to know that absences are covered by a caring substitute teacher.

Even if you are only available 1 or 2 days a week, anything helps! You choose which days you work, and your schools too. If you only want to substitute at Brier Creek, great, you are not required to work at other schools too. For more information on the requirements to become a substitute, current incentives, and how to apply, please visit Virtual information sessions are being offered on January 14 and January 21. To register for one of those sessions click here.

3rd Grade Parent Meeting: BOG & RTA 2021 Information Session (from Melissa Gough)

This week 3rd grade families received an email regarding the BOG for virtual students and the RTA (Read to Achieve) process. I will be holding two meetings next week to share further explanation and answer any questions you might have. It would be helpful if you submit any questions using this form ahead of time so I can be sure I have as many answers as possible. I will also have time at the meeting for questions that come up. I look forward to seeing you there! -Melissa Gough (

Information Sessions:

Update to Inclement Weather Guidelines

For the remainder of the school year, if the weather prevents us from having in-person classes, we will have an asynchronous learning day rather than a Saturday make-up day. No make-up day will be required. We will take into consideration that winter weather and snow days are a time-honored celebration in our community and assign work accordingly. While there will be requirements for work, families should expect to also have time to celebrate their own traditions. You will continue to receive an email and text message when the school day is modified due to inclement weather. When possible, the announcement will be made the day before so you can plan ahead.

Reminder: Food Distribution Sites are Open

Through June 30, 2021, all children age 18 and under may receive breakfast and lunch at no cost via Curbside and Big Bus Food Truck Pop-up locations. Meals are also free to all Wake County students when they are at school for in-person instruction. Meals will not be available on holidays designated on the student’s calendar. For more information, visit Our school continues to be a curbside food distribution location and we continue to have Big Bus food service at the corner of Deep Hollow and St. Giles Streets.

Families can apply at any time for free or reduced price meals at school, which may also qualify them for other state and federal benefits. Learn more at
