Principal's Post | November 2, 2020

Greetings, Jet Families,

I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend and a safe Halloween! We had a wonderful week last week and enjoyed having our K-3, Cohort 1 students in the building. The students were diligent with wearing their masks and social distancing, and seemed to just enjoy being in school with their teachers and friends. We are excited to welcome a new group this week! Below are the announcements for this week:

Instruction This Week

This week, students who are in K-3, Pre-K, and EBS on Cohort 2 will be in the school building for in-person learning. Tuesday will be Asynchronous Remote Learning for all, no students will be in-person.

Preparing for In-Person Learning This Week: Pre-K-3, EBS, Cohort 2

Our Returning to In-Person Learning website page has been updated with information. Please review it carefully and discuss the health and safety expectations with your child. There are several videos that you can watch together, including this video about arrival that I shared with students today in their Google Classroom.

All parents are asked to sign this attestation form that you have received and understand the expectations. If you are unable to print it this weekend to send on Monday, we will send a copy home with your child.

Because parents will not be able to walk their children to class when they come, some children may be feeling especially anxious. Please assure them we have lots of staff here that will help them, many who have introduced themselves here in this video.

We look forward to welcoming the K-3, Pre-K, and EBS students on Cohort 2 on Monday! If you are not sure which cohort your child is in, please contact your child’s teacher.

2020-21 Virtual Science Olympiad Team

Brier Creek is now enrolling 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders in our virtual Science Olympiad team! Mrs. Perez, the Science Olympiad coach, will hold remote meetings every Thursday afternoon from 4:30-5:15. Each week may include demonstrations, videos, discussions, games, or other activities we can do on Google Meet. Students will also have assignments to complete on their own. We will be preparing for a virtual tournament that will take place in the spring. If your child is interested, they should fill out this application to be added to our Science Olympiad Google Classroom.

P2 This Week: Perspective

On Monday, we'll begin learning about perspective. Perspective means that you appreciate when people see things in different ways. You have the ability to understand the world from multiple points of view. Perspective is also referred to as wisdom and is distinct from intelligence. People with this strength are sought out for advice because they see the big picture and can make sense of the world’s complexity. This strength of perspective gives individuals the ability to see to the heart of difficult matters and achieve clarity. Most importantly, they are honest and behave in an ethically consistent manner.

Perspective is usually gained over time, as one accumulates more knowledge and experiences. However, developing perspective is not only a matter of time. It comes from truly listening to others when they talk and working to understand new points of view when reading books, listening to stories, or watching movies.

This week's example is Muniba Muzari. In this video, you'll hear how she uses her strength of perspective to overcome hard times -- and recognize all the good that she has. This is why, as she explains, her son helped her understand that "her glass is half full" and that it's all about using her head and her heart in the right ways.

PTA Spiritwear <A Message from Your PTA President, Jeannie Sollars>

We know that this year might look different than what we’re all accustomed to, but that doesn’t mean our school spirit should be minimized. If anything, it means that we should be putting even more of our energy into making sure our Brier Creek pride is loud, strong, and here to stay.

We know Spiritwear is more than just t-shirts and sweatshirts. It’s a connection, when students need it most.  Spiritwear gets kids excited about our school, it gets them feeling connected to their friends, and it gets them feeling grounded in the community.

Please join us in spreading excitement about what this school year has to offer and order your Spiritwear online today!  https://briercreek2020.itemorder.com/

The Brier Creek Online Store is now open for business. And it’ll be open 24 hours a day until November 13th.  Share the link to the store with your friends. There’s power in numbers, and we’d really love to see our whole Brier Creek community, parents & alumni included, showing off their new gear!

Have a wonderful week and don’t forget to vote!

Take care,

Kathy Livengood, Principal
