Principal's Post | August 31, 2020

Jets Families,

Welcome to Week 3 of the 20-21 school year! This week, students will move into a full schedule (except Kindergarten). We understand that some families won’t be getting devices until later this week. If your child is not able to access his/her Google Classroom and class meetings, please make sure you stay in touch with the teacher. Thank you for your praise and encouragement for the teachers over these last few weeks. Your support is invaluable!

FYI: Changes to Food Distribution Services Starting September 1

Effective September 1, families are required to provide a student ID number and pay for their meals based on their meal benefits status. Families are encouraged to use MySchoolBucks to prepay for meals to reduce any payment collections at curbside. Free and reduced-price meals will be available for eligible students. Families may pick up meals at our curb-side locations without a student present if they can provide the student’s name and ID number. Visit for updated food distribution location information.

Remember, BCES is a curbside pickup location. Visit our Cafeteria staff Monday-Friday, from 10:45-12:45, to pick up a hot lunch and breakfast for the following day. The corner of St. Giles Street and Deep Hollow Drive will continue to be a Big Bus Delivery location, with the bus arriving by 10:30 am.

Families may still apply for free and reduced-price meals. Eligibility and application information is posted on For the 2020-21 school year, students who qualify for reduced-price meals will receive breakfast and lunch at no cost. Meals will not be distributed for the Labor Day Holiday. Due to our transition to the National School Breakfast Program, students’ names and student ID numbers will need to be provided beginning Monday, August 31 to receive breakfast for Tuesday, and beginning Tuesday, September 1 to receive breakfast and lunch.

Families and Schools Together (FAST) Supports Childcare Needs

The Families and Schools Together (FAST) Initiative is a community effort to help address the childcare needs facing our community during remote learning. There are providers currently offering childcare at below-market rates who have the capacity to enroll more children. Scholarships and subsidies are available on a case-by-case basis. Please visit for more information.

YMCA Scholastic Center Coming to Providence Baptist Church

For our families in the Raleigh Gardens and Casa del Sol communities, a YMCA Scholastic Center is opening in your neighborhood! The program, part of the YMCA Community Hope Program that has been serving our students for years, will be housed at Providence Baptist Church. Online registration is required and the cost is $10/week per student for families in these communities. Contact Joy Wright for help with registration -

Positivity Project Starting This Week

We are kicking off our 20-21 Positivity Project (P2) instruction this week with a dive into the Other People Matter Mindset. P2’s mission is to “empower America’s youth to build positive relationships and become their best selves.” Teachers will include 10-15 minutes of P2 instruction in their Morning Meetings each day.

This week, students will learn about the five elements of the Other People Matter Mindset. This mindset will help our students understand ways to build positive relationships with friends and families:

  1. Identifying and appreciating the good in others;
  2. Knowing my words and actions affect others;
  3. Supporting others when they struggle;
  4. Cheering others’ successes; and
  5. Being present and giving others my attention.

This year, P2 has developed P2 for Families to help families bring the P2 conversation home. Check out the resources online!

Instructional Materials

If you were not able to pick-up your child’s instructional materials during our pick-up sessions, please contact your child’s teacher to schedule a time to pick those up from school.

Remember, we have a 3-day weekend this weekend since we have Monday off for Labor Day. Have a wonderful week, Jets!

Your Proud Principal,

Kathy Livengood
