Good evening Jet Parents!


We knew there would be hiccups this week as we had our first week of virtual learning, however, by and large, we had strong participation and engagement with our students and families! Thank you for your support of the teachers and school as we continue to work to support our students!


Instructional Material Pick-Up

Most families have picked up their instructional materials for this year. If you were not able to pick up your child’s instructional materials last week, we have three more opportunities this week:

  • Monday, 8/24, 11:00 am - 12:00 pm at the corner of St. Giles Street and Deep Hollow Drive
  • Tuesday, 8/25, 8:00-9:00 am in the Carpool Loop
  • Thursday, 8/27, 8:00-9:00 am in the Carpool Loop


Single-Subject Acceleration (SSA) Test Request Update

SSA testing requests are continuing to be accepted through the end of this week. Please email them to Melissa Gough ( 2019-2020 test requests already collected will still be valid, you do not need to resubmit. Testing will occur online.  All students whose parents requested Single Subject Acceleration (SSA) will be assessed within the first 30 days of remote learning. Testing will occur between the 11th & the 30th day of school. Students meeting the scoring qualification will be placed in the accelerated course no later than the 7th week of school. Special Education

If your child has an IEP, your child’s Case Manager will be contacting you this week to discuss service delivery in the remote setting. 


Teacher Meetings & Assistance

We have decided not to have Office Hours in our schedule, rather, we will have a process by which parents and students can request help and meetings. Teachers are available to meet with parents and students between the hours of 8:30 am and 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday, outside of live instruction time. If you need to meet with a teacher, please email that teacher directly and include 2-3 times that might work for you (between the hours of 8:30 and 4:30 and when the teacher is not delivering instruction), and indicate whether you would like a phone call or a Google Meet. The teacher will respond within 24 hours to schedule an appointment, including a Google Meet code if you have indicated that option. If your child needs additional assistance, he or she should contact the teacher through Google Classroom and the teacher will schedule an appointment directly with the child. 


Technology Help and Troubleshooting

Please continue to use this WCPSS site as a resource for you to better understand the tech tools we are using this year. If you are having trouble, you can contact the Help Desk Online or call 919-694-8100. 

We DO NOT have information here at school regarding if your device is ready to be picked up or when it might be ready. If you have already requested a device, either through the Technology Survey in July or through our school survey, the district will contact you when your device is ready for pick-up. If you have not yet filled out either of these surveys, please complete our survey now, we need to hear from each family, even if you do not need a device. 

From the district regarding device distribution: We thank parents and students for their patience as we work to distribute the more than 44,000 Chromebooks and 13,000 hotspots that have been requested. If you requested a device, you will be notified of your assigned pick-up date as soon as possible, if you have not already. Thank you for understanding that we need to limit the number of people who are notified to ensure distribution sites can maintain social distancing. This is for the protection of families, staff and volunteers. As of Friday, all middle and high school students and modified calendar students who requested only Chromebooks prior to this week will have been notified with their pick-up date.


Google Meet Etiquette for Parents

Thank you for your help with getting your kids started this week! We had good attendance in Morning Meetings, despite the challenges many families face with schedules, obtaining devices, and supervising multiple children at once. Based on teacher feedback from this week, I’d like to share a few tips with parents:

  1. If your child is on camera, you may also be on camera. This week, some teachers saw parents in pajamas, heard parents fussing at their kids, heard comments about the school/teacher, and more. Please be mindful of what is in the visual and auditory background when students are on a live Meet with their teacher and class.
  2. Allow your child to work independently during a Google Meet. While we know students may need help with their technology from time to time, they are more capable than you might be giving them credit for. Teachers are teaching them how to navigate the technology the class is using and they need to practice for themselves. Please allow them some space to navigate, figure things out, and seek/get assistance from their teacher. “Productive struggle” is how students learn.
  3. If you have questions or need to meet with the teacher, schedule an appointment. During a Google Meet is not an appropriate time for parents to ask questions or carry on a conversation with a teacher. 


If you have questions, please reach out to your child’s teacher. If he or she can’t answer them, they will find the right person for you.
