Spotlight on Students Honoree

Congratulations to Jaden Bell, a 5th grader in Ms. Hunsberger’s class, for being named as this year’s BCES Spotlight on Students honoree! Each year, the Wake County Public School System Board of Education honors one student from each school with the prestigious Spotlight on Students award. Jaden was nominated for this award by his former teacher and was selected by a school-based selection committee. Qualities and traits that are considered when considering a student for this honor are:

  1. Achiever and Active Learner
  2. Good Citizen
  3. Advocate for Wellness
  4. Responsible Decision-Maker

Jaden is all of these things and more! He works to be the best he can be each day, supports his classmates, and demonstrates humility in all that he does. Congratulations, Jaden!

Benchmark Reading Assessment

The Wake County Public School System’s Vision 2020 Strategic Plan is focused on graduating students who are ready to be successful in college, in the workforce, and as productive citizens in our communities.  To meet that goal, we know students must develop their knowledge in reading, mathematics, science, and other subjects. Knowing how our students are developing in these key areas will help us create learning experiences that better prepare them for their futures.

To assess our students’ progress in Reading, students in grades 3, 4, & 5 will participate in a mid-year “benchmark” assessment in the next few weeks. These assessments will provide teachers with valuable information about where students are in their learning journey at the halfway point of the year.  They will then be able to use this information, along with the classwork students have been producing all year long, to determine the areas in which students might benefit from some extra support or enrichment between now and June.

Participation in the mid-year benchmark assessments will not impact your student’s report card grades or academic standing in any way.  The results will be used by your child’s teacher(s) to help evaluate how well they are preparing all students to be successful for the remainder of this year and into next year.

More information about these mid-year benchmark assessments can be found on the WCPSS website or please contact your child’s teacher if you have any further questions.

No After-School Spanish this Spring

Sadly, due to low enrollment, Sarah’s Spanish School has decided not to offer an after-school program at Brier Creek this spring. We are hopeful they will try again in the fall.

PTA News and Updates from your PTA President, Brittany Wells

  • The Olympics for Tracks 1 and 2 kicked off last week.  Students will earn tokens, classroom rewards and team pom pom points for funds raised, books collected and events completed. The team with the most points at the end of their round wins Kona Ice.  Register your child at, and send 5 emails to friends and family to help earn the first 2 charms for your child.  For more information on the Olympics, and how your child can earn rewards visit: .

  • Save the date to watch your child in the Run Around the World that will conclude each Olympics.  Tracks 1 and 2 will have their Run Around the World on February 5th, and Tracks 3 and 4 will have theirs on March 4th.  Each grade will run during their specials time, and your student will earn 1 pom pom point for their team for each person that attends.

  • We are still looking for volunteers to help out with the Olympics.  The BCES PTA does not use an outside company to help run the Olympics so they are able to put 100% of the money raised back into the school.  This means we need lots of volunteers to help make this fun for the students and successful. Please sign up using the links below to help your child’s class earn 5 pom pom points.  Tracks 1 and 2: and Tracks 3 and 4: .

  • Our next PTA board meeting is February 3 at 6pm in the Media Center.  We would love for you to join us!

  • Save the date for our next Family Night Out at Warrior Tech on Friday, February 28 from 6-9pm.  Look for a flyer to come home soon in your childs purple folder.

Please look for the weekly email from your child’s teacher and check your child’s grade-level website for additional information. Grade-level websites can be found here. Please reach out to your child’s teacher(s) with any questions.

My Jets Best,

Kathy Livengood, Principal
