Principals Post

Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year! We got off to an amazing start this week with Meet the Teacher, 1st Day, and KinderJet Staggered Entry for Tracks 1, 2, & 3! Thank you to everyone who came out Monday evening for Meet the Teacher, it was a great turnout! Hopefully, you received the July Flight Forecast in your child’s Friday Folder last week. We will be publishing these each month. A hard copy will be sent home with each child and it will be posted online as well. These Principal Posts will now be semi-monthly and posted, emailed, and texted on the 2nd & 4th Sundays of each month. You should also be receiving a weekly communication from your child’s teacher to keep you updated with what is being taught, important announcements, and more. If you are not receiving these, or you need this communication in hard copy, please let your child’s teacher know. I am looking forward to an amazing school year, as is the staff. Please reach out anytime you have a question or concern that I can help you with!

Designing Our Destiny

Perhaps you have seen the display in the lobby or the staff shirts that say “Designing our Destiny.” I’d like to share with you why we chose this theme this year and what it means to us as a staff.

While some believe that destiny is pre-determined, we do not. We believe that our choices and actions create the destiny we vision for ourselves and our children. The design comes in through our intentional decision-making and purposeful planning. Our teacher teams plan for units of instruction together using a framework called Understanding by Design. We use research-based strategies to create rich learning environments and build relationships with students. Some examples of how we do this is daily Morning Meetings and use of Restorative Circles, while the Positivity Project supports students’ abilities to build meaningful relationships with each other. We teach and reinforce expectations so that students can manage their emotions and behavior with support from caring adults.

With those beliefs, strategies, and frameworks, we are able to be purposeful so that each child is engaged in meaningful learning each day. Through design, we create our destiny and ensure our vision, values, and core beliefs are lived and fulfilled every day.

Communication in 2019-2020

We know that systematic communication is a key component of a strong school-home relationship. We are making a couple of changes in how we communicate this year in order to strengthen our connection and better serve our parents and community. After reviewing feedback from parents on the Panorama Family Engagement Survey from last spring, potential changes were discussed by our School Leadership Team and designed to increase communication between our school stakeholders. Here is what you can expect this year:

    • Your child’s teacher is your primary source for questions, classroom information, and announcements. Each teacher will send a weekly email home to parents. If you need a hard copy, please let your child's teacher know.
    • A Purple Friday Folder will go home with your child each Friday. Please check it for work samples from your child and important information from your child's teacher, the school, and the PTA. Send the folder back each Monday. (It will always go home on track-out day and should be returned when your child tracks back in.)
    • Your child’s teacher, along with his/her teammates is maintaining and updating a grade-level Google Site for curriculum information, announcements, ways parents can support their children, and more! Please check there regularly for updates.
    • Ms. Livengood will send a Principal’s Post, a semi-monthly, school-wide message, on the 2nd and 4th weekends every month via our School Messenger system. Parents can choose to receive these messages via text and/or email, if the school has your current contact information. To get it texted to you, make sure the school has your current cell phone number and then text YES to 67587. To ensure your email and phone number are current, please contact our Student Information Data Manager, Mark Flynn, at These messages are also posted on our website on the Principal's Message Page where you will also find past messages. School Messenger will also be used to send emergency announcements and reminders. All parents are highly encouraged to ensure they are receiving these messages.
    • The Flight Forecast is a printed newsletter that will be sent home on the 1st Friday of each month in Friday Folders. This has important dates for the month, school announcements and news, and more! Flight Forecasts are also posted on our website for your reference.
    • Social Media - Brier Creek maintains a social media presence on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. Your child’s teacher and many of our support staff also have Twitter accounts and some have Instagram as well. Please follow us there for updates and glimpses into our school and daily life:

Fall 2019 Parents are Connected Night - Mark Your Calendars!

We hope you will join us from 5:30-7:00 on Wednesday, August 14th for our Fall 2019 Parents are Connected Night! We will have 3 rotations (5:30-5:55, 6:00-6:25, and 6:30-6:55) where you can learn more about what your child is up to at Brier Creek this year and how you can support him/her at home. A detailed schedule will be released soon, but you can expect to be able to choose from topics such as:

  • Curriculum Connections in Your Child’s Classroom (with work samples from your child and information from your child’s teacher)
  • Flex Friday Fun (hear from the Specialists’ about the choices your 2nd-5th grader has for his/her Friday specials)
  • Read to Achieve Requirements (highly encouraged for 3rd grade families)
  • Reading Benchmark and Screening
  • Number Sense Assessments for K-2 Families
  • Positivity Project, Boarding Pass Reinforcements, and other Social-Emotional supports for children
  • Multi-Tiered System of Supports

Please make sure you review arrival and dismissal transportation procedures on our website and clearly communicate to your child’s teacher how your child will get home each day. If you need to change your child’s transportation after he/she has gone to school, please call the front office prior to 3:00 pm - 919-484-4747, press 0.

Bus Riders - Bus routes are posted on our website or can be picked up in the front office. . DO NOT assume your child is on the same bus as a previous year, please check the routes carefully. If your child is not yet registered for the 2019-2020 school year as a bus rider, you can do so here. Bus tags for registered students will be given to the student by his/her teacher.

Carpool - ALL students and families must get a new carpool tag for the 2019-2020 school year. These are available in the front office or at Meet the Teacher. Any vehicle without a current tag will need to park and report to the front office. If you ask someone else to pick-up your child in carpool, please ensure the driver has your carpool tag or he/she will need to go to the front office. Anyone picking up a child without a carpool tag will need to show ID and be approved to pick-up the child. Please carefully review arrival and dismissal procedures on our website

Walkers - Walkers must live in the BCES Walk Zone. Parents must submit a new Walker Contract annually before a student is permitted to exit as a walker. Anyone driving to campus to pick up a child must use carpool procedures - no one is permitted to park on the street to pick up children.  Walker pick-up passes can also be used in carpool on inclement weather days or when a parent is occasionally picking up a child using carpool.
