Principal's Message, 11-16-18
Greetings Stough Families,
Here are your weekly updates:
1. Next week, we have a regular school day on Monday and an Early Release Day on Tuesday. Student dismissal begins at 1:15 on Early Release Days. Students are out of school from 11/21 - 11/25. The following week, 11/26-30 is a regular five-day week.
2. Our next big evening event will be Global Festival on Tuesday, December 11 from 5:30-7:30pm. All students will perform. You've gotta see the one-minute video featuring one of our first graders... here it is: Global Festival Video
3. This past week and next, our Positivity Project trait of focus is GRATITUDE. Check out this P2 article by another principal on the "New Science of Gratitude."
I also want to highlight a visitor we had at Stough this week. You might have seen some of his visit on Twitter. Marine Corporal Derrick Sharpe visited some of our fourth graders, and he shared a powerful story. It was a great opportunity for our students to see bravery and express gratitude first-hand. I asked for Derrick's permission to share this brief youtube video that features him and an organization called Homes For Our Troops. Check it out: CPO Derrick Sharpe Video
4. Our friends with the "Two Men and a Mom" morning show on Mix 101.5 have asked us to support their annual Toy Drive, benefitting the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Triangle. If you can contribute, please bring new toys to the large boxes in our lobby during the week after Thanksgiving. They'll plan to pick up the boxes on November 30. Here's a note from the radio show:
"WRAL-FM’s Two Men and Mom are once again teaming up to make the holidays brighter for some area children in need. Kyle, Bryan & Sarah recognize that many children in the Triangle may not have the joy of opening presents on Christmas Day — and with your help, they are on a mission to collect 3,000 toys for Girls and Boys around the Triangle.”
5. The PTA reminds you that its winter spirit-wear sale will end this weekend at midnight on Sunday! There are lots of colors of t-shirts, hoodies and long-sleeve shirts. All orders will be delivered to classes on December 7. Here's the link for orders: Stough Spiritwear
The next opportunity for a PTA Stough Spirit outing is at Dunkin Donuts (Glenwood, by Umstead park) on Saturday, 12/1, from 10am-2pm.
6. Y'all know I'm not a Duke (dook!) fan, but I got an email from their Athletic Department offering any students free football tickets and concessions for their game vs. Wake Forest on November 24. If interested, here's the link: Dook Tickets
Thanks for reading. Have a great weekend,
Chris Cox
