Dear White Oak Families,

Hope everyone had a wonderful weekend. Thank you for reading through our weekly newsletter!

Quick Notes/Updates:

  • The Attendance Challenge has been rescheduled to April.
  • Our 100th Day of School is coming up on Monday, February 12. This is a special day in Kindergarten, but we celebrate across the school.

Student Health Reminders

Please remember this important information to help protect your children -- and their classmates -- when they're under the weather, so that they can return to the classroom healthy and ready to learn.

When your child is sick:

The best thing you can do is to keep your children home when sick. This will help stop the spread of illness to other children and staff. Keep them home when they show any of these symptoms:

  • Fever of 100.4 or higher
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea and Vomiting
  • Severe headache
  • Red, watery eyes with yellow discharge
  • Undiagnosed rash
  • Inability to attend learning activities
  • Change in student’s typical medical status

Children should stay home until they have been fever-free without medication for at least 24 hours and free from nausea, vomiting and diarrhea for at least 12 hours.

Do NOT give children fever-reducing, anti-nausea/vomiting or anti-diarrhea medication and then send them to school. Medications wear off after lunch (during math) when symptoms can impact student learning.

Stories from Specialists

AIG with Ms. Su

5th Grade:

  • Math: Students will design and furnish hotel suites and rooms while crafting a persuasive sales pitch. They'll brainstorm unique features for their hotel, budget for furniture across five categories, and analyze potential profitability. Through this immersive experience, students will enhance their math skills and develop creativity, critical thinking, and presentation abilities, exploring the realms of design, finance, and persuasion.
  • Reading: Students will be diving into an exciting exploration of Mars! In our lessons, they will learn all about the Red Planet and the incredible challenges and possibilities it presents. From its chilly, dry atmosphere to the special robots called rovers sent to explore its surface, our students will discover the wonders of Mars. They will also explore the idea of what it would take for humans to live there one day, imagining a future of space exploration and adventure. We're excited to see their curiosity and imagination take flight as they embark on this cosmic journey.

3rd Grade Math Explorers:

We use the Math Stars program to push students beyond traditional classroom boundaries. This program aims to spark curiosity about number relationships and geometric properties through engaging problems. By embracing the challenge of mathematical problem-solving, students are encouraged to explore new horizons in mathematics, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation for the subject.

Science Fair Reminders

Mark your calendars for March 14th – it's time for the annual Science Fair!

This year, the event will be exclusively in-person, so get ready to dive into exciting projects. Mrs. Overton has introduced the Science Fair to K-5 classes. Sign-ups are open and will close on February 19th. If your child prefers a group project, it's your responsibility to assist them in gathering the necessary information for the form, such as other parents' emails, kids' names, and teacher names. Remember, permission from the other students and parents is a MUST for forming a group. Let the scientific exploration begin!

Go to our website for more information and to register! Contact Mrs. Overton, if you have any questions, either through Talking Points or email at soverton@wcpss.net.
