11.17.2019 Principal Dana King's Weekly Message
Early Graduation Meeting
There will be an early graduate meeting on Monday, November 18th at 9 am in room 217.
Fall Play - “Bad Seed”
Make plans to see Millbrook Theatre's fall play performance of "Bad Seed". This thriller is based on William March's novel which would later become a successful movie in 1956. The story follows Rhoda, a little girl who is very charming and sweet on the outside, but hides a darker more sinister side to her that is revealed during the story.
The performances are November 21, 22, and 23 at 7pm in the auditorium. Tickets are $5.00 for WCPSS students and $10.00 for general public. The Drama Boosters will also be holding their annual silent auction for the event. Audience members can bid on donated items from local businesses, gift cards, gift baskets, and a range of other merchandise that can help you kick off your holiday shopping.
We hope to see you there!
MHS Book Fair - Media Center & PTSA Collaboration
Our Media Center, in collaboration with PTSA and Quail Ridge books, will be hosting an MHS Book Fair from December 4 - December 11. It will be open during all lunches, and before all winter concerts and our NAS inductions. For more information, please view THIS flyer.
With a continued focus on literacy and providing relevant and engaging choice reading options to our students, PTSA has pulled this event together with our Media Center specialists and English teachers to keep kids reading! We have suggested titles and recommendations from all grade levels, along with Quail Ridge’s expertise on what kids are buying currently - and it will all be set up in the Media Center starting Dec 4!!
Quail Ridge will give us 21% profit on every book sold, and our hope is to use that earned money as credit to buy books for our media center. (We have a desperate need for relevant choice reading and foreign language novels).
If you’re looking for gift ideas, please stop by before any of the evening events scheduled at MHS Dec 4-11.
Would you like to help or be involved? We need volunteers for daytime hours. To Sign Up Click this Link: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/4090445abae2c7-millbrook2

Interims will be distributed to students in their 4A classes on Friday, November 22nd.

10th Grade IB MYP Personal Project - Supervisor Meeting #2
This week, on Tuesday and Wednesday, all 10th grade students will have their second meeting with their Personal Project Supervisors. These meetings will take place in their English 10 class. Sophomores have been working to finalize their “clear and highly challenging goal” and complete their project timeline to present for final approval from their supervisors. After this supervisor meeting, students cannot change their Personal Project Goal, as they will need to begin the process of working on and completing their product.
We’d like to encourage sophomore parents and guardians to talk with your students about their project goal and timeline before their supervisor meeting. The Personal Project is an exciting opportunity for our students, as we are hoping to encourage and enable students to:
- participate in a sustained, self-directed inquiry
- generate creative new insights and develop deeper understandings through in-depth investigation
- demonstrate the skills, attitudes and knowledge required to complete a project over an extended period of time
- communicate effectively in a variety of situations
- demonstrate responsible action through, or as a result of, learning
- appreciate the process of learning and take pride in their accomplishments
If you want more information, feel free to review the Personal Project Workbook students received in September. If you would like to see testimonials and examples of past projects, please visit our MYP Student Website: http://millbrookmyp.weebly.com/myp-personal-project.html

The Truth About IB!
This week we are tackling the below myth about the IB Diploma Programme. Check back next week as we address another myth.
Myth:
Students who join the IB Diploma Programme will not have the time to play sports at Millbrook High School.
In fact:
Many IB Diploma Programme students are one, two and three-season athletes, as well as club athletes. Diploma Programme students have played on all of Millbrook’s athletics teams and continue to do so in large numbers. This year these students will represent the Diploma Programme on the following teams: football, cross country, track, volleyball, cheer, golf, swimming, diving, basketball, soccer, lacrosse, gymnastics, tennis, softball and baseball.
In fact:
A 2019 Diploma Programme graduate is currently swimming with the Miami Hurricanes and is training to compete in the Olympic trials! An MHS Diploma Programme graduate from the Class of 2015 not only went on to play baseball at UNC, but is now playing with the Miami Marlins system! We do not claim the Diploma Programme made them better athletes, but it did allow them to apply their work ethic to their academic studies and thrive in the classroom as well as in the pool and on the diamond!
IB Diploma Programme Small Group Info Sessions
Sophomore parents and students! Are you considering joining the MHS IB Diploma Programme? Join a Small Group Info Session to learn about the value and demands of the Diploma Programme and about courses and scheduling during this two year programme.
The Diploma Programme is a demanding and rewarding academic programme that will prepare students for college and future challenges. It is designed for motivated students who enjoy the learning process and want to challenge themselves and grow personally, academically and intellectually.
One recent graduate described his experience in the Diploma Programme as “the highlight of my high school experience!” Another graduate described it as “a community, an experience, and nothing short of life-changing.”
Go to http://bit.ly/DPSmallGroupMeetings to join a mandatory Small Group Interest Meeting. The student and at least one parent are required to attend. Contact Mr. Baron, Millbrook’s DP coordinator, if you have questions.
(REPEAT) The Great Wildcat Reading Challenge
The Great Wildcat Reading Challenge has begun! Our Media Center would like to invite students to join Millbrook staff in completing the challenge of reading ten different books that meet a few preset criteria (see the bookmark link below). Participants have until May 1st to complete the Challenge. You can pick up the bookmark from the Media Center circulation desk or print one yourself. Once completed, turn it in to one of our Media Center staff to have your name put up on our Wildcat Reader Wall. If you need help finding your first read, our Media Specialists would love to help you!
