Student Attendance/Semester 1 Grades

As we begin the 2nd semester, I wanted to share a piece of data with you as it pertains to 1st semester grades and attendance.  I believe that we all know and understand that class attendance has an impact on student grades and there exists a strong correlation between student attendance and student achievement.

During 1st semester, students that attended 90% of their classes or were absent less than 10 school days, had an overall average of 81 in their core classes (English, Math, Science, & Social Studies).  Students that did not attend 90% of their classes or were absent more than 10 school days, had an overall average of 56 in their core classes.

As a school, we continue to examine ways that we can improve student achievement through instructional strategies that are being used to reach every student.  As our partners, we ask that you continue to stress to your child the importance of attending class everyday and being engaged during lessons.  Our teachers are working tirelessly to create engaging lessons that not only explain the content effectively but make it fun and interesting to the students.

A simple strategy that I would like to share with you that I began doing last year with my 3 kids is asking them 3 questions.  I ask them these 3 questions at dinner time or when I use to pick them up from school.

  1. Tell me one thing you found interesting or learned today in class?
  2. Tell me something you found difficult to understand or challenging in class today?
  3. Tell me one question you asked or a statement you made in class today?

Through these questions, my kids and I have had wonderful discussions about what they are learning in school/class.  This has resulted in them paying attention better in class and being more engaged during lessons.

Because I believe we can all learn from one another, I have created this Google Document for you to share what simple or creative strategy you have used to help keep your child engaged in learning during this time.  Please take some time over the next few days to share with us what you have done.

Asynchronous Day

We do not have an asynchronous/remote learning day this week.  Students will attend class everyday this week for live instruction.

Ongoing Announcements

Material Distribution

If you were unable to pick up your son/daughter’s 3rd quarter material, you may pick it up from the front office any day this week between 8:00 am - 4:00 pm.

Middle School Athletic Activities

At this time, middle school athletic activities have been suspended.  The district will communicate to us if we will host athletic activities.  We do ask that if you are still interested in participating in athletic activities to please complete the Google Form.  In addition, you will need to complete the Middle School Athletic Participation Form found at this LINK.

One correction to make is we will accept physical forms dated on or after March 1, 2019 not 2020.   So if your child received a physical on or after March 1, 2019 and it was turned into Coach Umphrey, we do not need another physical form from you.

Lastly, athletic activities are open to all 7th and 8th grade students. After assessing interest and determining available space, we will decide if interested 6th grade students are able to participate in that sport.

If you have any questions about athletics, you may email Coach Umphrey at vumphrey@wcpss.net

Yearbook

The last day to purchase an 8th grade ad in the yearbook is on February 11.  If you would like to purchase an 8th grade ad or if you have any questions, you may email Ms. Rion at hrion@wcpss.net.
