Mr. McCotter's Summer Bengal Message (7/23/19)
Greetings Bengal Family,
I hope you all are having a wonderful summer and enjoying your time away. We'd first like to welcome all of our new Bengals! We are very excited about opening up a new school year with everyone. There are still a few weeks left of summer, but I want to go ahead and begin sharing some information with you as we prepare for the start of the 2019-2020 school year:
Student Schedules: The Administrative team and Counseling team are working diligently to create a schedule that best meets the needs of each student. This work is ongoing throughout the summer and will continue through August. Please note that student schedules will not be finalized until mid-August. You will be able to pick up an "unofficial" schedule at "Walk Your Schedule" Night (see below), and then you will receive your final schedule on Monday August 26th which is the first day of school. Until then, there is still a chance that your child's schedule is subject to change. No schedules have been formally released, but we are aware that some students may still be able to see their schedules in PowerSchool. If you are able to see your schedule, please note that this schedule is in fact subject to change.
Enrollment at FVMS: Each year, we look forward to welcoming all of our wonderful new students, and this year we anticipate another increase in our enrollment. It is our goal to finalize a schedule utilizing as accurate enrollment numbers as possible. If you are not planning to attend Fuquay-Varina Middle School, please call or visit during our summer hours (9:00am-3:00pm) to complete your withdrawal. This will help us ensure that we are making final decisions with the most updated enrollment numbers. Thank you so much for your understanding.
6th Grade Families (Summer Camp): We would like to say a huge, "Welcome!" to our 6th grade families! As a member of our incoming 6th grade class, you are now beginning a new journey. We want to help you make a successful transition between elementary school and middle school. For students to register for summer camp, please contact Ms. Allison Holstein, 6th Grade Counselor at aholstein@wcpss.net or call the Student Services Office at 919-557-2727, ext 24117. Sixth Grade Camp has been created as a special introduction to the middle school experience. Students will have the opportunity to meet other incoming 6th graders, tour the school, practice using locks for your lockers, meet 6th grade teachers, and learn about expectations. The dates and times are Tuesday August 6th and Tuesday August 13th from 8:45-11am (choose 1 date to attend).
"Walk Your Schedule" Night: Mark your calendars for "Walk Your Schedule" Night. This event will be held on Thursday, August 22nd from 5-7pm. To avoid parking/traffic issues we have designated times that we suggest for each grade level to arrive:
Grade 8: 5:00 – 5:40 PM
Grade 7: 5:40 – 6:20 PM
Grade 6: 6:20 – 7:00 PM
This is an informal event designed for you to receive your schedule, walk throughout campus, meet your teachers, learn any school supply needs, and see your classroom locations. Each student’s Homeroom assignment will be posted for you in various locations on campus (grade level building, main office lobby, auditorium lobby, cafeteria lobby, etc). Your Homeroom teacher will have your class schedule. At this event you will also be able to sign up for the PTSA, buy PE Uniforms, buy Spirit Wear, etc. We look forward to seeing you there!
7th Grade Families (Vaccination Reminder): I want to remind 7th grade students that you are required to receive the Tdap and Meningococcal vaccines if you have not done so. If you have not yet had these vaccinations, the vaccinations should be administered within the first 30 days of school in order to remain eligible in school. These summer months are a great opportunity to get these vaccinations done. Once you have completed this requirement, please notify us so that we can maintain accurate records in Student Services.
Athletic Participation: For 7th and 8th Grade students who are academically eligible, if you are interested in playing sports please be sure that you have the appropriate Physical Forms complete before tryouts. For Fall Sports, the initial meetings and tryout dates for Football, Girls' Soccer, Girls' Volleyball, and Cheerleading will begin after the school year starts. We will be sure to announce specific meeting times to you and include them on our website.
Transportation: If your transportation eligible child will be riding the bus from the same address to the same school next year, you do not need to take action. All up-to-date transportation information will be available in Home Base/ PowerSchool. If you need to update your bus service, please go online to www.wcpss.net/busrider. Any transportation eligible family who needs to make a change or request service for 2019-20 is asked to make your request by July 29, 2019 in order to receive service on the first day of school. Bus routes will be posted on August 16th. For any special requests, please visit the website mentioned above. A link to the Transportation website can be found on the WCPSS Homepage. You can also review bus registration information at the following website: www.wcpss.net/busrider
Starting at the beginning of the school year, Weekly Bengal Messages will be ongoing and will be provided to you on Sunday evenings with a variety of information. That is all I have for now. I hope you continue to have a wonderful summer, and as always GO BENGALS!
Sincerely,
Mr. McCotter
Proud Principal of Fuquay-Varina Middle School
