October 23rd WFMS Family Message

October 23rd WFMS Family Message

Good afternoon WFMS families,

NC Check-Ins

All students must take the NC Check-Ins this year as required by the county. This assessment will be given 3 times a year for each math and reading as well as 8th grade science.

The purpose of NC Check-Ins:

  • Formative benchmark assessments in ELA, Math, and Science

  • Provides immediate & detailed feedback on student performance on grade level specific content standards

  • Exposes students to similar question types and rigor found on EOG & EOC

  • Aligned to NC grade-level content standards

In order to make sure we are assessing students after they have been taught the standards, we have not been able to set schoolwide dates for all of these Check-Ins. The following Check-Ins will be given in November:

  • November 3rd

    • Science - Grade 8

    • Math 7+ - Grade 7

  • November 17th

    • Reading - Grades 6, 7, and 8

The next set of Check-Ins will not occur until January/February. Those dates will be released closer to the time. It is important that your child is here for their assessments. Some students will need headphones during this time so please make sure your child has access to them during these dates.

End of Quarter 1

The end of the first quarter is on Thursday, November 3rd, which is only 9 school days away.  Please review PowerSchool with your child through Parent Portal (please contact Victoria Hughes ( if you do not have access to this) or have your child pull up their PowerSchool account.  Work with them to complete missing assignments and get them turned in to their teacher.  If you have questions regarding an assignment or grade, please reach out to the specific teacher for that course.

Intramurals Program

The WFMS Intramurals Program started this past week on Tuesday and Thursday at 2:45pm. The program will run every Tuesday and Thursday until 4pm and is open to any student who is not playing an in-season sport at WFMS.  This includes 6th graders.  Students attending should report to the gym when an announcement is made for clubs/activities and check-in with Mr. Sweet as they enter the gym.  Students must wear athletic shoes and must be picked up no later than 4:05pm.  Questions may be sent to Mr. Sweet (

Athletics Events This Week

Wake Forest Middle School hosts Neuse River Middle this week in girls soccer and volleyball on Wednesday at 4:00pm and in football on Thursday at 4:00pm.  Students are encouraged to wear pink on Thursday to school and to the game as “Pink Out” to show school spirit and support our teams.

Tickets to the football game will be available during all lunches on Thursday for pre-sale.  Ticket prices are $6.  These ticket sales will be cash only.

For students attending events, the Student Code of Conduct applies during all events and students are expected to follow those expectations.  Students should NOT leave campus to go to a local business or The Factory and return to any event.  If a student leaves campus, they will need to return with a parent or guardian to drop them off.  Students attending events are expected to remain in their last class of the day until a call is made to allow spectators to report to an assigned area where staff supervision will be provided until the game or event begins.  Outside food or beverages will not be allowed into games.  Concessions will be available.

Please review the Spectator Expectations Document with your student if they will be attending events.

Student spectators must be picked up NO LATER than 30 minutes following the conclusion of an event or game.  Volleyball and soccer games typically end around 5:00pm and football games end around 6:00pm.  Students should not leave the campus during games and return to be picked up after the event.  Announcements will be made for students to call their rides beginning 45 minutes before the end of a game or event.  If a student is not picked up by 30 minutes after the game, they will not be permitted to attend future events or games as outlined in the Student Expectations Document (linked above).
