November 1st WFMS Family Message
Good afternoon WFMS Families,
We are one week away from our first cohort of students returning on November 9th. We continue to prepare for the arrival of students on-campus for the first time since March and are excited to see them again. We apologize for the lengthy message, but want to provide you with all the information you need to prepare for your child’s return to WFMS.
We will be sharing some short videos throughout the week next week to help students better understand some of the new protocols and procedures that will be in place. We have linked a few images and notes below regarding some of the new protocols for hallways, Physical Education, and “Lunch & Learn.”
Below are updates and announcements from WFMS for the week of 11/2 - 11/6.
If you were unable to pick up your materials during distribution last week, please stop by the school this week between 7:30am-2:15pm. Please access the main entrance and let Mrs. Mueller know you are here to pick-up materials. She will have someone bring the materials to you.
Virtual Academy for Spring Semester
The window for registration in the Virtual Academy closed this Wednesday, November 4th. Please review the information linked below for next steps regarding this matter.
PTSA Meeting - Tuesday, November 3rd at 6:30pm
The PTSA will hold a meeting this Tuesday, November 3rd at 6:30pm to vote on new board members for the 20-21 school year. If you are a PTSA member and can attend, please plan to do so. Information for the Zoom Meeting was sent through School Messenger. Any questions can be sent to wakeforestmiddlePTSA@gmail.com.
Fall Virtual Open House - November 5th
The staff at WFMS have enjoyed working with your students throughout remote learning during Quarter 1. As we prepare to begin the Plan B Transition and Virtual Academy schedule, we will host a Virtual Open House on Thursday, November 5, 2020 from 5:30- 7:00 pm. Please find the attached flyer here with the schedule. This will be your opportunity to meet your students’ teachers, learn about the curriculum, meet the administration team, and receive technical/ parent portal support. You will be able to follow your students’ schedule that night by accessing the teachers’ Google Meet links. You will also be able to visit support rooms to get help with the parent portal, tech issues, speak with administration about the Plan B transition, etc. Google Meet links will be sent out through talking points. We will not be able to accommodate individual conferences that night, but feel free to set-up a conference with your student’s teacher(s) or counselor for another date and time. We look forward to meeting our families.
Student Water Bottles, Earbuds/Head Phones, & Technology
Due to sanitation and safety reasons, students will need to bring their own water bottle for use at water fountains in the school this year.
Students should also purchase an inexpensive pair of earbuds or headphones to use with their device each day. We recommend students not bring any expensive headphones such as Beats or AirPods, as the school will not be responsible for these items if they are lost or stolen.
Students are asked to bring their own device with them to school each day. This includes devices assigned to students by the district in the spring or earlier in the 1st few weeks of the 20-21 school year. No devices may be shared.
Transportation for Students in Plan B
At this time, student transportation is working on bus routes for our students who will be attending classes via in-person learning (Plan B). Route information will be updated within the next week. For more information please contact 919-805-3030.
Surge Protectors Needed
As we prepare for our students to return, we are in need of surge protectors with long extension cords (10 or 15 foot) for our in-person classrooms to provide charging capabilities for student devices while maintaining social distancing. If you are willing to donate one to the school, please reach out to Mrs. Valerie Ellington. If a donation of more than $50 is made, the donation is considered tax deductible. We have linked two examples of surge protectors below.
Fall picture dates are as follows:
Cohort C: November 12th
Cohort A: November 16th
Cohort B: December 1st
Virtual Academy students will be able to make appointments to have pictures taken. This information will be provided to families in next week’s Family Message.
Child Nutrition Services
Meals will be free for all students through December 31st. Families are encouraged to apply for meal benefits. For the 2020-21 School Year, students who qualify for reduced price meals will receive breakfast and lunch at no cost. The School Board has approved an update to the CNS Meal Charges Policy, allowing students to charge the amount of money that they are unable to pay for a meal, so long as this does not create a negative account balance of more than $5.00 (five dollars). For more information on meal prices, click here. Also, at this time there will be no A la Carte Sales (cookies, ice cream bars, water, etc.)
