April 9th Parent Message - COVID-19 Updates
I hope this message finds you well and in good spirit. It is hard to believe we have been out of school for almost four weeks now. For the past two weeks, our staff has been reaching out to our families to check-in. In addition, they have been working on professional development and designing learning opportunities for the start of Phase 2 of Remote Learning next week on Monday, April 13th.
I would like to extend a thank you to the families who completed the Remote Learning Survey shared in our message last week.
On April 3rd, WCPSS sent a message to families with information around Remote Learning. If you have not reviewed this, I encourage you to take time to do so in preparation for supporting your child as we move forward. Information from this correspondence may be located by viewing the April 3rd message. In addition, any information shared by the district can be accessed at the WCPSS Covid-19 Response website as we continue to navigate through these uncertain times and the Covid-19 epidemic.
Thank you for flexibility and grace as we enter this new phase of remote learning at Wake Forest Middle School and in the WCPSS. We are in this together and will continue to press forward as we adjust to these uncertain times. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me at email@example.com if you have any questions or concerns.
Chris Bradford, Ed.D.
Phase 2 of Remote Learning
Here are some helpful hints regarding Phase 2 of Remote Learning as we begin on Monday, April 13th.
- Students should login to their Wake Ed Id in order to access all materials. Teachers will be posting and sharing lessons, activities, and information through their Google Classrooms or Google Websites. Teacher information for these sites can be located on the WFMS Faculty Directory website, along with the teachers’ contact email information.
- Students should communicate with WCPSS staff using their WCPSS student email account.
- A suggested schedule for your student each day is linked here on the WFMS website. Following this schedule will give your student a routine and structured day for balancing a new learning environment virtually. Please remember this is simply a suggested tool for our families, as we recognize it may not work for all students’ individual circumstances. Throughout this entire pandemic, flexibility has been and will continue to be at the center of everything we do.
- Teachers will be providing mostly asynchronous instruction as we want to be sensitive to the varied needs of our families and staff. Teachers are working collaboratively in their grade-level and subject areas to create activities and provide relevant instruction for students around key concepts within their area.
- Each teacher will have “office hours” each day to provide further support for students who reach out. Fridays are also designated as more flexible days where a teacher can meet with smaller groups of students to provide targeted support. These “office hours” will be posted on the teachers’ websites. If you have trouble locating them, please reach out to the teacher, grade-level counselor, or an administrator for support.
If you have questions over the coming weeks, you can reach out to your teachers, grade-level counselor, or administrator. Contact information for administrators is listed below. If you are in need of a virtual meeting, these can be scheduled, as well.

Additional Resources for Remote Learning
In addition to school based resources, the WCPSS Remote Learning Website contains learning resources in all content areas and can continue to be used as we move forward as another support for students. Students can always access DreamBox for additional math support and enhancement.
UNC-TV and the NC Department of Public Instruction have established a partnership that will support remote learning with content that will be accessible to students—especially those with limited or no internet access—at no charge.
Each weekday, appropriate programming for grades 6-8 is available on UNC-TV's North Carolina Channel from 8am – 1pm. These educational program blocks are available on the North Carolina Channel, available statewide for free over-the-air, through cable providers and streamed online.
We will continue to share more information regarding other resources for families to access and utilize for student learning as we receive them.
The Wake County Public School System is awaiting further guidance from the Department of Public Instruction with regard to grading.
As noted in the parent email shared by WCPSS on April 3rd, “The NC Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) has shared with school districts that they will provide further guidance on final grades for students in grades 9-11 as we approach a decision as to whether or not we will return to school after May 15. WCPSS will make determinations on how to record final grades for students in grades 9-11 based on ongoing guidance for the state.”
Students should put best efforts into 4th quarter content to the degree feasible in the current circumstances.
A third quarter grade of pass(P) or incomplete(I) is being used as a placeholder since school was abruptly closed on March 14. Once we have clear direction from NC DPI, student progress between now and the end of school and teacher monitoring of student achievement will determine final marks for the school year.
At this time, no date or time has been scheduled for device deployment for those who responded to our survey two weeks ago. Our intent is to communicate with families once devices have been assigned to us and schedule the date and pick-up time within the parameters outlined.
World Walking Challenge
The Healthful Living Department is looking to promote exercise and some friendly competition among teachers/students/ and administration. Please share with anyone who is interested in your household. The group name is: Wake Forest Middle School. You can add the app to your phone which allows you to sync this to the program. Please track your steps honestly, we as a school are looking to have some fun during this time. Please feel free to upload pictures on your walks, and use the chat function to say hello. I will start our "walk" Monday April 13th.
New Assistant Principal
For those who are unaware, Mr. Ralph Chew’s final day with Wake Forest Middle School will be this Friday, April 10th, as he will be moving on to serve in the same role at Beaverdam Elementary beginning next Monday. Mr. Chew has been a tremendous educator with us for the past three years and he will be missed. However, we know he will do great things in his new role and new school.
We hope to have an announcement for our families regarding the new assistant principal for 7th grade sometime next week. In the interim, you may reach out to any of the administrators with questions regarding 7th grade.
Field Trip Refunds
For families waiting on refunds from field trips, we are hopeful that we will be able to begin the process very soon. We have been working with the vendor to process a refund so we could provide this back to our families. These refunds will be sent in the mail to the address you provided on the google form shared two weeks ago or to the address on file in PowerSchool.
