September 1st Parent Message
Thank you for an overall successful first week of school. The transition from summer back to school for our students and staff was very smooth. Kudos to our parents, students, and faculty for making the first week a success.
Thank you for following procedures in morning carpool. A couple of brief reminders for our carpool families:
- Please only use the inside lane, closest to the school for drop-off and do not try to pass cars in the outer lane. Not following the traffic pattern delays traffic flow for others and is not safe for our students, staff, or other drivers.
- Pull as far forward as you can and have your child exit your car once you stop. Staff will be instructing them to do so and your support in getting them out of the car and into the building is appreciated. Doors are open from 7:00-7:30 and staffed by WFMS teachers at three entrances (by the gym, middle of school, and front entrance) for students to enter.
- Beginning at 7:30, students are considered tardy and need to sign-in at the front lobby to receive a pass to class.
- We ask that parents who come early proceed through carpool and drop their child off. Parking in spots throughout the campus delays traffic once carpool has begun. We ask that you not park during carpool unless you have a meeting and need to enter the school yourself.
Please remind your child to come outside quickly to carpool and look for their ride! We ask that you continue to follow the directions of our staff who are monitoring traffic flow. Parents should not move any cones located in lanes. There is a cone placed strategically in the lane farthest away from the school to allow emergency vehicles to enter, if necessary. It is important for any car in the second lane to go no further than the location of that cone. Once the 2:15 dismissal bell has rang, WFMS staff will move the cone to allow you to pull forward.
Please follow the traffic pattern outlined and go down to the stadium and back up to the carpool line. This allows us to get as many cars as possible on our campus and avoid back-ups on Main Street.
WFMS Student Agendas are on sale for $5.00. The agendas can be purchased online by accessing the link on the parents tab of the WFMS website located at https://www.wcpss.net/domain/12204. This is a required item for all students and is school specific with information needed for Smart Block each day.
We will continue to sell agendas during lunches next week, also. Students who order online can pick their agenda up during lunch.
Students who scored a level 1 or 2 on their EOG last year will take the iReady diagnostic on September 11th and 12th. If your child is testing please encourage them to bring headphones to school on these dates. Students who are not testing will be involved in an enrichment lesson in one of their classes.
Students may receive or self-administer medication at school when the medication is medically necessary for health or learning and must be taken during the school day. Medication must be prescribed by a licensed physician.
Alternative medications, such as herbal or homeopathic medications that are not tested by the US Food and Drug Administration for safety or effectiveness, lack safety information and therefore cannot be administered or taken at school.
Students are not permitted to carry their own over-the-counter medication such as Tylenol and Advil. These types of medications may be kept at school, to be administered by the school, if the appropriate form is completed by parent and physician. The required "1702 form" and additional information can be found at https://www.wcpss.net/Page/167.
School staff may not administer these medications without appropriate documentation. If you have questions, please reach out to the school nurse, Laura Phillips (email@example.com), for clarification.
Student Dress Code
Parents and students are reminded of the new policy approved by the WCPSS Board of Education for student attire. This new dress code promotes principles similar to those experienced and expected in the workplace. The policy can be located at https://bit.ly/2U1t7Vt. Please note that head coverings of any kind will not be allowed in the school building unless aligned with and specified in the revised policy. Please assist us in maintaining a professional environment for our students to learn.
Child Nutrition Information
Please review your student’s id number with them if they are planning to buy lunch at school. Students will not have access to any means to warm-up lunch items, so please be mindful of this when packing a lunch for your student.
Information regarding school lunches can be accessed at www.MySchoolApps.com. Parents may submit money for their student’s account, as well as access information regarding free/reduced lunch. If you have questions, please reach out to the school for assistance.
7th Grade Student Immunizations
Parents, please check with your child's pediatrician to make sure they've received the required 7th grade shots, Tdap & meningococcal. Per NC State Statute, every 7th grader must provide proof of vaccination to the school. Documentation of immunizations must be provided to the school as soon as possible in order to avoid student exclusion from school.
If you have questions regarding your child’s status, please call the main office at 919-554-8440 and dial extension 22437 for our data manager, Michelle Beverly, or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
If you are interested in helping with the PTSA this year, please contact PTSA President Emily Hodgeman at email@example.com. Information for membership and spirit wear can be located at https://www.wfms-ptsa.com.
