Good afternoon, WFMS families,
EOG Preparation
As we prepare for End-of-Grade (EOG) testing this week, we want to thank our families for your continued support and partnership in your child’s education this year. EOG tests are an important opportunity for students to demonstrate what they’ve learned throughout the year and can be a highlight for students who try their best and achieve proficiency or growth.
Here are a few helpful strategies to ensure your child is ready to do their best on test days:
-
Get a Good Night’s Sleep: Make sure your child gets plenty of rest the night before each test.
-
Eat a Healthy Breakfast: A nutritious breakfast helps improve focus and energy throughout the morning.
-
Arrive on Time: Being on time avoids unnecessary stress and ensures your child starts the day calmly and confidently.
-
Encourage a Positive Mindset: Remind your child that they’ve worked hard and are ready. A few words of encouragement can go a long way. Be positive with them and give them a pep talk before seeing them off to school.
-
Minimize Distractions: Try to avoid scheduling appointments or early checkouts on testing days.
We are proud of our students and the growth they’ve shown this year. With your support, we know they’ll shine during testing and highlight their full potential.

EOG Pep Rally
On Thursday, we hosted 97.5’s Brian Dawson for an EOG Pep Rally. Students, staff, and parents were able to come together and enjoy a few moments together as we prepare for the EOGs. Brian Dawson highlighted the importance of education to students and reminded them to try their best and how prepared they are from their hard work this year for the upcoming EOGs. We want to thank the parents who were able to join us for their support. We are so proud of the students and how attentive and engaged they were during the pep rally.
Cell Phone and SmartWatch EOG Policy
As we prepare for EOGs, we want to make you aware of the testing policies in place this year regarding electronic devices. The North Carolina Department of Instruction has explicitly stated that "Cell phones are not permitted in testing sites unless there is a medical need.” We encourage students to leave cell phones and other electronic devices, such as iPads and Smart Watches at home during the week of testing. If those items are on campus, they will be collected and stored in a secure location outside of the classroom during testing to avoid the potential for misadministration and the need for a retest. Any student who does not comply and has a phone or Smart Watch in testing areas will have it confiscated and a parent must come to pick the phone up.
8th Grade Promotion Ceremony and End of Year Celebration
Our 8th grade Promotion Ceremony will be held on Tuesday, June 10th at 6pm. Due to our space limitations in the gym and fire code, each student will be given two tickets to the event. Tickets will be distributed to students on Thursday, June 5th in their homeroom after the EOG. While we recognize this may impact some families, we are required to follow the fire code for our building capacity. Families may work amongst themselves to trade tickets if they choose, but the school will not have additional tickets to distribute. Do not call the school or reach out to a teacher or staff member requesting more tickets, as our fire code will not allow us to grant them and be equitable for all families.
We will provide a live stream for additional family members or friends to view the ceremony. The link will be shared on the date of the event. More information will be coming home with students soon.
The 8th grade dance will be held on Thursday, June 5th, from 5 pm - 7 pm. This event is free for 8th-grade students, but the permission slip shared earlier this month needs to be returned by Wednesday, June 4th. Only WFMS 8th-grade students will be allowed to attend the dance.
PTSA Updates
WFMS parents, click HERE for an important message about PTSA leadership for next school year. If we do not have parents volunteer to take PTSA leadership roles next year, many of our PTSA-sponsored events and programs may not occur. Roles for large and small time commitments are available. Step up to make a real difference at your child's school!
Our 8th grade dance will be on Thursday, June 5 from 5-7pm in the gym. Students will get to enjoy an evening of dancing and fun with their friends! PTSA will provide pizza, chips, a cookie, and water for all students attending. We need parent volunteers to help chaperone and serve food. This will be the last opportunity to volunteer this year! Sign up to volunteer and/or donate snacks HERE.
Our final PTSA General Membership meeting will be on Tuesday, June 10 at 5:45, immediately before the 8th grade promotion ceremony in the gym. Join us to vote on our summer budget and next year's slate of nominees for the PTSA board.

Staff of the Week
This week, we proudly recognize Ms. Stephanie Brown (7th grade math) as our Staff Member of the Week! Ms. Brown creates an inclusive and welcoming classroom where every student feels valued and supported in their math learning journey. She challenges her students with high expectations while showing them daily respect and encouragement. A gifted communicator and connector, Ms. Brown builds strong relationships with families, students, and colleagues alike. Her dedication to creating a positive and engaging learning environment makes a lasting impact on our school community. Thank you, Ms. Brown, for all that you do.
WCPSS Employee Excellence Award
Congratulations to Ms. Amanda Gambler (Intervention Coordinator) and Ms. Emily Leasure (AIG and Instructional Facilitator) who were recognized by WCPSS on Friday afternoon for the Employee Excellence Award. Both Ms. Leasure and Ms. Gambler are exceptional teacher leaders at WFMS who support students and staff each day through their data organization, school improvement efforts, and instructional leadership. We are so proud of them and thank them for all they do.
Counselors’ Corner
End of Grade testing occurs next week here at WFMS, and counselors have seen an uptick in students sharing their stress, concern, and feelings of anxiousness about doing well. Parents can be a source of comfort and encouragement during this challenging time by reassuring their child(ren) that their efforts to do well are enough. Often, students feel pressure to achieve a certain score and begin to overthink and worry about the outcome instead of focusing on their process and performance. Encouraging your student(s) to have a positive attitude about the test and their preparedness for it could promote their self-confidence. Help them to remember that this test is one step in their learning journey, and that growth over time is the goal.
