Good afternoon WFMS families,
Donations of Facial Tissues
We are still in need of facial tissues at the school. If you are willing and able to donate any amount of unopened boxes of facial tissues, please drop them off in the main office with Ms. Mueller.
Cell Phone EOG Policy
As we prepare for EOGs, we want to make you aware of the testing policies in place this year regarding electronic devices. The North Carolina Department of Instruction has explicitly stated that "Cell phones are not permitted in testing sites unless there is a medical need.” We encourage students to leave cell phones and other electronic devices such as iPads and Smart Watches at home during the week of testing. If those items are on campus, they will be collected and stored in a secure location outside of the classroom during testing to avoid the potential for a misadministration and need for retest. We want to get this information out to our families as soon as possible for planning purposes.
8th grade Promotion Ceremony
Our 8th grade Promotion Ceremony will be held on Tuesday, June 10th at 6pm. Due to our space limitations in the gym and fire code, each student will be given two tickets to the event. We will provide a live stream for additional family members or friends to view the ceremony. The link will be shared on the date of the event. More information will be coming home with students soon.

Eliminate and Guess Smart: Strategies for Tough Questions
If your child gets stuck, remind them they can eliminate wrong answers and make their best guess. Leaving questions blank doesn’t help!
🎯 Practice Here: NCTest Practice Resources
Test Tip of the Week:
❌ Use process of elimination. Crossing out what’s clearly wrong can make finding the right answer easier.
PTSA Updates
WFMS parents, click HERE for an important message about PTSA leadership for next school year. If we do not have parents volunteer to take PTSA leadership roles next year, many of our PTSA sponsored events and programs may not occur. Roles for large and small time commitments are available. Step up to make a real difference at your child's school!
Our 8th grade dance will be on Friday, June 6 from 5-7pm in the gym. We need parent volunteers to help set up, clean up, chaperone, and sell concessions. Be on the lookout for a volunteer sign up coming soon!
Our final PTSA General Membership meeting will be on Tuesday, June 10 at 5:45, immediately before the 8th grade promotion ceremony in the gym. Join us to vote on our summer budget and next year's slate of nominees for PTSA board.

Counselors’ Corner
Feel like your teen is always hiding out in their bedroom, and all attempts to get them out only make them retreat further? You are not alone. It is developmentally typical for teenagers to retreat to their rooms and live there- here are some of the reasons your child(ren) might be doing this.
They have spent all day around a ton of people at school with many different demands on their time and attention, and they have hit sensory overload. Hiding out in their room is a positive reset and coping strategy, not just avoidance or isolation seeking.
Often kids feel like conversations with parents always result in a lecture or disagreement, and their room becomes a neutral zone for them. Likewise, they might know they are not feeling emotionally stable and know they will blow up at their parents over nothing and feel bad or be in trouble for it. Sometimes choosing their room is a buffer zone to avoid conflict.
They are seeking independence at this age but also have very little control over much of their lives. They have to go to school, attend family functions, make good grades, their body is being flooded with hormones, etc… Their room is a space where they rule supreme, which feeds that need for some control.
They are figuring out who they are during this time of big change in adolescence and being in their private space lets them experiment and express themselves without observation or judgement from others. It is a space to just be themselves, in whatever wonky way that looks that day.
Here are some ways to help your child(ren) during this time: Respect their space and honor it is theirs as appropriate; knock to enter so they can see that in you. Have positive conversation with them after school before you ask about their homework and grades. Plan some chill, hang out time with them- without questions or lessons- to remind them you are there for them and a safe space. Remind them that all people need space sometimes and model that for them when you do, too.
