Good afternoon WFMS families,
Fall Trunk or Treat Event
Thank you to all our families and students who attended our fall Trunk or Treat event this past Tuesday. We had over 600 people in attendance making it our most successful Family Engagement event in recent history. As we host these nights throughout the year, we encourage you to come out and connect with our staff and community as we partner to build a positive culture and support system for our students.
Morning and Afternoon Carpool
As we begin the 2nd quarter, we want to remind you about carpool procedures. While in the carpool area, please drive cautiously and slowly. Morning carpool “peak” times are from 6:45 - 6:55 and 7:20 - 7:30. Families arriving in between those times experience minimal flow of traffic and ensure their student is in class before the start of the instructional day at 7:30. We encourage you to arrive earlier than 7:20.
When dropping off, remember to have your student exit the car, the first time the carpool line stops along the front of the building through the trailers. Do not wait to drop your student off at the main entrance. The bus lot should not be used for student drop off. This creates a safety hazard for our bus riders and drivers.
In the afternoon, at least one lane of traffic from the main entrance at S. Main Street coming straight towards the media center leading to the front of the building should be left free in the event emergency services need to access the school.
Students at Local Businesses After School
We have recently received phone calls from surrounding businesses regarding student behavior after school hours when they leave campus at 2:30 each day. These businesses have reported theft, fights, and other inappropriate behavior. Once students leave WFMS campus at 2:15 each day, they are subject to the rules and regulations of the local businesses and local, state, and federal statutes. If you allow your student to go to any of these locations after school, please speak with them about the consequences inappropriate behavior or violations of law may have, which could include law enforcement involvement. Help them understand the value of being good citizens within their community.
Teacher of the Year
We would like to congratulate Ms. Ashley Beal, 7th/8th grade math teacher, who was selected by her colleagues as the 24-25 WFMS Teacher of the Year. Finalists under consideration for the award were: Ms. Stephanie Brown, Mr. Carl Depo, and Ms. Megan Johnson. All four are phenomenal teachers. We are excited to have Ms. Beal represent our school at the district-level.
We also want to congratulate Ms. Heather Bryant (6th grade special education) and Ms. Terrica Brooks-Jones (CTE) for their recognition for the Diane Kent Parker First Year Teacher of the Year Award.

Upcoming Student Schedule Changes
Due to our increased enrollment this school year, we are in the process of hiring new teachers to join our staff. As we make these changes and create new classes, we will also be shifting other students’ schedules to balance the size of classes to provide the most conducive learning environment. Students who are impacted will receive a copy of their new schedule once classes change. We anticipate these occurring at the start or shortly after the start of the 2nd quarter.
Day of Awesomeness
Our PTSA Fundraiser Day of Awesomeness will be held this Friday, November 8th. Specific times will be designated for each grade-level to enjoy this celebration. Students should bring an extra pair of socks as shows are not allowed on the inflatables in case their socks get damp from the ground. We will have a concessions food truck (sweet treats) and Kona Ice on campus for the event. Students are responsible for bringing their own money to purchase items from these vendors, as they are not included in the fundraiser event celebration.

The beginning of November is a time filled with many celebrations from different cultures and is the start of American Indian Heritage Month.
-
Diwali is one of the major religious festivals in Hinduism, Jainism, and Sikhism and lasts for five days. The festival celebrates the victory of light over darkness. Different regions of India and the different religions celebrate with unique customs that might include the lighting of small candles or lanterns, intricate patterns to decorate floors, fireworks, and homecoming or community events. Dia de los Muertos, Day of the Dead, is a time to honor members of one’s family who have died and to celebrate their memory. It is rooted in Aztec culture and widely celebrated in Mexico and by people of Mexican heritage globally. Often, family altars are set up with pictures of deceased ancestors and food and treasured items that they loved in their life. Skeletons are an integral part of the celebrations, including gifting skull candy to friends. This is a cultural event to both honor those no longer with us and to recognize that death is a part of life. (Source)

All Saints’ Day is a Christian celebration of those saints, known and unknown, who have passed from this life and live on in heaven. It has evolved over time in the unique branches of Christianity to include celebrating the members of the church that have passed over the last year or all Christians both living and deceased. The month of November has been a celebration to honor Native American Heritage for many decades and is a time for all Americans to learn about the many different American Indian cultures, traditions, and people. North Carolina recognizes our great state as a home for eight tribes: the Coharie, the Eastern Band of Cherokee, the Haliwa-Saponi, the Lumbee, the Meherrin, the Occaneechi Band of the Saponi Nation, the Sappony, and the Waccamaw-Siouan. The North Carolina Museum of History has an annual celebration of American Indian Heritage every year in November; this year there is a virtual education day on Friday, November 22, and a huge in person festival on Saturday, November 23. The festival includes demonstrations of traditional native ways and cultures, performances that demonstrate scientific, artistic, and the cultural contributions of both the past and the present indigenous people in our state. More information can be found here.
