Principal Peckham's Weekly Message

Greetings Martin Middle School families!

I hope you all had another wonderful week on the Ranch.

This afternoon I have some updates and reminders for you, to help you feel prepared for next week.

Reminders/Information:

Annual Fall Fundraiser Results!

I WANT TO EXTEND a HUGE THANK YOU  to all of the Martin community for your efforts and donations as we have reached our fall fundraising goal of over $30,000. Thursday of last week we were at just about half-way and between Thursday and Tuesday of this week, the community rallied and raised another $17,000 IN JUST THOSE 4 DAYS. This money is going to be put to excellent use fund the programs, cultural arts experiences, assemblies that we have come to love, as well as fund upgrades and new supplies for our teachers and classrooms.I am also happy to report that every grade level brought in the $5000 that was challenged over those 4 days- so each grade level has earned the “Fun/Free period of social time with their grade level”-to be planned for early in Quarter 2. Stay tuned for exactly when that will be, but the assistant principals are already busy planning. Also, because we are so grateful- all students received a sweet treat during lunch today courtesy of the pta, just as a thank you!

Again, thank you to all our families and contributors to this effort. We are proud and humbled by your support and promise to be excellent stewards of these generous funds.

Hurricanes PowerPlay!

For the third consecutive year, WCPSS is partnering with the Carolina Hurricanes to bring Power Play to all of its middle schools- including Martin. This exciting partnership supports a community-wide healthful living campaign around daily physical activity outside of school, plus allow students the chance to attend a Hurricanes game. This year the Power Play time frame will be between Monday, October 14 and Friday, November 22, 2019. Your child will be able to be part of this event by striving to exercise daily for 60 minutes! This year’s challenge features both individual and school-wide components, as well as goals for each. The individual component will include the following:

● Through an online tracking system, students will provide their name and the number of minutes exercised each day. Please see the log-in instructions.

● Students will strive to achieve 60 minutes of daily physical activity throughout the allotted time frame.

Those who achieve a minimum of 1200 total minutes of physical activity will receive two complimentary ticket vouchers to a Hurricanes home game.

Students have already had opportunities to hear about this program via our PE classes and the morning news, and obtain information via their homeroom teachers. For your ease, we have also attached a copy of the parent letter and log-in instructions in both  in case they are needed.

Reminders for Carpool and walkers:

The mornings are getting darker and we are gently reminding all our families to make sure they are exercising caution. Carpool parents should not be dropping students off anywhere, except by the Student Services entrance. Also, parents- please remind your walkers that they need to cross roads only at designated crosswalks. Again, arrival time is congested and we want to ensure that our student safety is maintained.
