Principal Peckham's Weekly Message

Greetings  Martin Middle School families!

This is your Principal, Lacey Peckham, with a special email on the eve of our first day! We are so excited to have everyone back in the building bright and early tomorrow!

I have a few tidbits to share tonight to get our first day and first week off smoothly.

It was wonderful having some of our 6th and 7th grade families on campus on Friday. We hope it was beneficial and helped everyone feel more comfortable and prepared.

If you weren’t able to join us, fear not!

Morning Arrival:

Tomorrow morning there will be Homeroom lists posted for all of our students in all three grade levels. All students  will quickly be able to find our their homeroom teacher and room number.

The building opens at 7:00 and student may begin entering at that time. Upon arrival they should report to the cafeteria for breakfast or gym for social time.  Later in the week, they will also have the Media Center as an option as well. Around 7:15, students will start to be dismissed to their homeroom classes with plenty of staff to support them getting there easily. Our 6th grade students will actually be picked up in the gym and cafeteria to head to their homerooms.

Your student will be reviewing key policies and procedures on Monday and a student handbook will be coming home on Tuesday to help everyone get acclimated.  In the meantime, just a reminder that we want our students dressed for success at school and aligned with the WCPSS dress code expectations. That includes no head coverings, and ensuring that they are sufficiently covered- from armpits to mid thigh. This policy will be more clearly outlined in the handbook, but it is always to double check some of your student’s clothes from last year as they grow so much over the summer!

Students riding a bus are encouraged to be at their stops about 10 minutes earlier than the posted route time as drivers are still learning their routes.

For students using carpool, we also encourage you to plan for a slightly longer morning than normal. There is likely going to be a great deal of traffic for carpool so we ask that you plan to arrive early and exercise patience and good will. Please review the carpool procedures via our Martin website or the PTA newsletter than came home. All carpool families should plan on entering the carpool line, as students should not be dropped off anywhere on Ridge Road or Horton Street to walk.

A couple of quick carpool pointers are:

Student pick up and drops offs must take place in the assigned area by using the lower entrance from Horton Street only.

Access to the lot is only permitted using the right lane of Horton St. from Ridge Rd. Do not use the service road entrance from the bus lot and attempt to cut in line. The service road entrance is for Special Transportation Services only.

Once in the carpool line, you will circle around the front of the building and follow staff direction to pull all the way down to the end of the straight-away. Once your car is anywhere under the awning by Student Services or in front of the flag pole your students may exit their car.

At all times, but especially the first few days of school, we are very concerned about student and driver safety and less concerned with tardies. Please be patient as we work through establishing morning routines. Also, though it looks long, it is actually very efficient.

Calendar Items:

Tuesday, Aug 27th: As mentioned in the PTA newsletter that came home, there will be an informal coffee chat for all parents new to Martin Middle School on Tuesday from 8-9am in the Media Center. This is an informal opportunity for any parents new to Martin, more specifically for any new enrollees or any parents who may not have made it to the 6th grade open house last week. The 6th Grade assistant principal and counselor will be available for introductions and any questions.

That concludes my news for the week.  I hope all are as excited as we are to get the school year underway tomorrow! Enjoy your last evening of summer- see you bright and early tomorrow!
