Principal Peckham's Weekly Message

Good evening Martin Middle School families!

We had an excellent start to October this week and I have a few highlights to share as we head into the weekend.

We just found out that our 2017-2018 Illusions Creative Writing Magazine won 1st place in the NC Literacy & Historical Association Yearly MS competition. This is a HUGE honor and an excellent showcase of the gifted and talented artists, writers, and designers involved. Congratulations to Mrs. Iadicicco and all of the students who contributed to the magazine. Keep in mind that if you have a creative writer, artist, or designer in your home, we will be collecting pieces during the second semester as we design this year’s magazine.

The following is some information to get you ready for what is coming next week.

Needs-Based Assessment/survey:

We want to take an opportunity to connect with any of our Martin families who may be in need of special assistance from one of our many community partner programs. If you are a family with a specific need, be it food, clothing, beds, or school supplies please take a minute to let us know. Visit the following link and check the box that best applies to your family’s specific need(s). (website mainpage)

Carolina Hurricanes PowerPlay Program:

We are excited to once again partner with the Carolina Hurricanes to implement Power Play in all WCPSS middle schools. Power Play will kick-off on Monday, October 1 and wrap-up on Friday, November 9. The goal is 60 minutes of daily exercise and 1200 minutes cumulatively over the six-week initiative.

The Carolina Hurricanes will award students who achieve the goal of 60 minutes of daily exercise throughout the allotted time frame (for a total of 1200 minutes). Each will receive two complimentary ticket vouchers to a Hurricanes home game.

Guides have been created to share with families and school staff to help log physical activity into the Power Play Dashboard.  Below is a link to a short video overview.

National Reflections Contest:

Does your student enjoy art, music and dance or have an interest in writing, producing films and taking photos? Then they should join us and have fun unleashing their inner artist with PTA Reflections! This year’s theme, “Heroes Around Me,” calls for your own unique interpretation through the arts. Pick up submission guidelines and an entry form from Ms. Hynus or the office and return by Tuesday, November 13th. For inspiration, visit the Reflections virtual art gallery and learn more about prizes and scholarships at PTA.org/Reflections.

North Carolina State Fair:

As you may or may not know, the NC State Fair is coming to town and starts next week. If you are planning to go, you can contribute to our school, by purchasing your tickets online and using our school code. Just visit the North Carolina State Fair website before October 11th and use Martin’s school code: 492 and a portion of the tieckt price will come directly to our school!  Feel free to spread the word to your friends and family.
