PERSEVERANCE IS KEY
The definition of perseverance, according to Merriam Webster, is continued effort to do or achieve something despite difficulties, failure, or opposition. Four fifth-grade students, Mackenzie, Danniel, Daniel. and Owen, in Ms. Monique Fennell’s class at Lake Myra Elementary School, not only understand perseverance on a personal level, but aim to inspire others to persevere in the face of adversity.
“Perseverance means to try your best and never give up even if something is hard,” said Mackenzie. “I have used it by doing cheerleading and getting my back-handspring tuck. Even if it’s hard, I pushed through and did it.”
“I think perseverance means something that you don’t give up on,” said Daniel, who has used perseverance in the classroom by improving his grades when he felt that it was too challenging to achieve.
“Always keep trying and never give up,” said Danniel, who has used perseverance by continuing to have a positive mindset, and using his 7-Habits while he is at school.
“Trying your best, having fun, and not giving up,” said Owen, who uses his personal experience to inspire others to persevere.
Owen describes an example of perseverance to be when a student is doing homework that they may find hard. Instead of giving up on completing a difficult homework assignment, a student would keep trying.
HOW THEY AIM TO INSPIRE OTHERS
“I want to inspire student to use perseverance by giving them compliments and ‘congratulations’ to increase their self-confidence, which leads to perseverance, “said Owen. Students should feel comfortable to speak up.
“I would inspire students by saying that everything is possible and you can do anything you put your mind to,” said Mackenzie.
Danniel wants to inspire students to use perseverance by a role model and showing them that he also uses perseverance.
Daniel wants to inspire students to use perseverance by teaching them the meaning of the word and then showing them through his actions.
