READvolution is Back!

READvolution is back!

Lacy Elementary School is excited to announce the return of the READvolution program.  READvolution is a partnership between the Carolina Hurricanes and three local public-school systems (Wake County, Durham County and Chatham County), that promotes reading outside of elementary school classrooms. The program challenges 150 elementary schools to read 2,020 books, asking individual students to perform 20 minutes of reading outside the classroom each day during the first semester, from Sept. 30 through Nov. 22.

Once they achieve their reading goal, students will be rewarded with free tickets to Hurricanes games, school appearances from Stormy and the Pepsi Storm Squad and more.  Schools that collectively read 2,020 books between Sept. 30 and Nov. 22 will be entered into a drawing by region to participate in this year’s Cool School Field Trip to the PNC Arena in Spring 2020. If your school is selected from the drawing to attend the Cool School Field Trip, students will have the opportunity to see a Hurricanes practice, participate in fun activities, and hear from the players.  Help us reach our goal of reading 2,020 books!

Students will be able to login online to track their reading times and books read. Students who meet the goal of 800 minutes read over the eight-week period will receive two free tickets to a Hurricanes home game. Schools that reach the 2,020-book goal qualify for the chance to attend the Cool School Field Trip at PNC Arena. Last season, the READvolution program resulted in over 10 million minutes of reading and nearly 270,000 books read. This season, the program runs from Sept. 30 through Nov. 22.

In addition to these goals, the Lacy Elementary School has goals as well.  Classes who achieve the goal of reading 60 books total as a class will receive an extra recess or a special dress up day of their choice, such as hat day or crazy sock day!  The top 25 students in hours read and books read will earn a “Hurricane Party” in the gym with Coach Smith, Ms. Watson and Ms. Crane.   Students may also put their name on a “puck” and hang it on the banner in the hallway near the gym when they complete their first book.  We want all Lacy Lions to hang a “puck” on the banner!

Students may log into their WakeID portal at wakeid.wcpss.net.  Once students log in, they will see the READvolution application.  Students must input the name of the book they are reading and log the number of minutes they read.  Once they complete the book, they may check that they have completed that book.  Do not check complete until you finish the book, it will not allow you to record additional minutes of reading for that book once it is checked complete.  Students may access the READvolution app at school or at home.  They will need to know their WakeID login and password.  If you do not know this information, you may check with your child’s teacher.  If it needs to be reset, contact your child’s teacher.  For our kindergarten students, who are not reading yet, they may participate by logging minutes a parent or family member reads to them.  You may also access the login from the following link.  https://readvolution.cengage.com/
