Trailblazer Times 8/10/20
Happy Monday Trailblazer families! As we are nearing the beginning of the school year, I know that you are anxious for information. I hope the information below is helpful to you. If you have any questions, please join me at the virtual PTA meeting on Tuesday, August 11th at 6:30 PM on Google Meet- meet.google.com/bye-cjqo-cze
Class Lists and Teacher Assignments
We received the information we needed this week to begin our work to create our class lists and teacher assignments. Our hope is to finalize this by the end of the week so teachers can start contacting parents to introduce themselves. Teachers will be reaching out to schedule individual conferences during the week of August 17th. More information about this is listed below in the orientation section of the email.
School Supplies
Supply lists are posted on the Banks Road website. In addition, WCPSS has purchased supplies to be distributed to students. We will be hosting a “drive-through” event Wednesday, August 18- Friday, August 20th to distribute those supplies once they arrive on campus. More information will be provided to you soon.
Chromebook and Hotspot Distribution
If you completed the technology survey and requested a chromebook or internet hotspot, you will receive information from WCPSS on technology pick-up sites and procedures. (Please note that our school is not one of the pickup sites.) The distribution date for the devices is scheduled for August 17. You will also be provided with information to support your use of the devices, and how to access additional help if needed. Please check out the WCPSS guide to technology- It demonstrates how to set up devices, login, and navigate some of the most used tech tools.
Orientation to Virtual Learning
As the district has shared with you, the first two weeks of school will include opportunities for teachers and families to connect, as well as for students to connect with each other. Teachers will use this time to share schedules, set procedures and routines, conduct one-on-one conferences, and ensure every student knows how to access assignments and materials. Teachers will provide a good foundation to maximize your child’s ability to engage appropriately with each other and their work during this time.

Academic Work
You can expect academic work to start picking up the pace in the second week and beyond. Please know that while week 1 will be very light (only morning meetings), there will be much higher expectations in place for students than in place during the quick transition to remote learning at the end of the last school year. Work will focus on covering standards the students missed at the end of last year, as well as new material for their current grade level. Attendance will be taken, and grades will be given. Your teachers will share more details in a virtual Open House video that will be linked on the Banks Road website on August 17th.
Pre-K and regional program students will not return on September 8th
The target date of Sept. 8 for Special Education Regional Program and Pre-K students to return to school buildings was predicated on our ability to ensure sufficient staff, sufficient transportation service and sufficient personal protective equipment (PPE) by that date. After assessing these three factors and soliciting feedback from staff members, we have determined we need more time to make sure all three of those dependencies can be met. Therefore, we no longer are targeting Sept. 8 as the date for regional programs or Pre-K students to return to school buildings. Those students will remain in the Plan B Transition phase along with all other students, receiving online instruction. As we develop a phase-in plan for staff and the return for students, regional programs and Pre-K students and staff will be considered within the total plan.
Special Education parents
WCPSS is inviting all parents of students who receive Special Education Services to watch a webinar regarding the upcoming school year on the WCPSS YouTube channel at 6 p.m. on Tuesday. Topics covered will include the opening of school in an online environment, the implementation of IEPs, and special education services. The video will be closed-captioned in English and Spanish. During the webinar, parents will be invited to share questions and feedback through an online form. Answers will be provided later in an FAQ.
