Explorer Express for 2/3/20

Positivity Project Character Strength: Forgiveness

Forgiveness is the ability to move past being injured and accept that people make mistakes. This does not mean rolling over and allowing yourself to be harmed. It does not mean that you forget the transgression. Those who demonstrate forgiveness have the ability to move forward after someone has hurt them.

By forgiving someone, you don’t have to say that what he/she did was okay. And, forgiveness is not contingent on the other person apologizing. For individuals, forgiveness has benefits that range from increased health to developing positive relationships to coming to an understanding that no one is without fault.

The ability to reconcile differences and move forward positively is a trait of any effective group. When people work together, conflict is inevitable. However, when people value each other’s contribution and believe in the group’s goal, they become more capable of moving past conflict toward genuinely positive behavior.

Counselor Appreciation Week

This week we honor our amazing school counselors, Mrs. O'Connor and Mrs. Wiener.  Their dedication to our students', staff, and families members' well-being is greatly appreciated.  Every day they meet with with students individually, in small groups, and teach whole classes supporting our school community's needs.  Please take a moment to thank them or send them an email in appreciation for their focus on educating the social, emotional, behavioral, and academic needs of all of our students!

Weatherstone Elementary Penny War! January 30th – February 8th

Put your spare change toward a great cause. All proceeds from our Penny War fundraiser will go towards supporting Weatherstone Elementary.

The students are so excited about our penny war. We've already raised over $600 for our school! Current grade level standings are 1st place- 5th grade, 2nd place- 2nd grade, 3rd place-4th grade, 4th place-K, 5th place-3rd grade, 6th place-1st grade. 1st place wins a pizza party for their grade. Follow the WES PTA on Facebook or Twitter (@WeatherstonePTA) for updates during the week.

Pennies are “positive.” Here’s how it works:

  • Containers will be located in the school lobby during arrival
  • Each penny counts as one positive point for YOUR grade level
  • Each silver coin counts as negative points for OTHER grade levels. In other words, dropping any money other than a penny (including dollars) in another grade level’s bucket takes points from their total
  • For example, dropping a quarter in another grade levels bucket will deduct 25 points from their total
  • At the end of the STEM Carnival on February 8th, all change/points will be tallied and the grade with the most points will win a pizza party
