Explorer Express for 10/13/19
Readvolution is Back Again
For the third consecutive year, we will partner with the Carolina Hurricanes to bring READvolution to all of our elementary schools. This exciting partnership will support a community-wide literacy campaign around daily reading outside of school, plus allow students the chance to attend a Hurricanes game.
This year the READvolution time frame will be between Monday, September 30th - Friday, Dec. 6, 2019. Your child will be able to be part of this event by reading daily for 20 minutes! (Students who have not started logging their books yet, can go back and enter them for last week.)
This year’s challenge features both individual and school-wide components, as well as goals for each.
The individual component will include the following:
* Through an online tracking system, students will provide the name of the book that they read and the number of minutes read each day. Students and parents can access their accounts through the Wakeid login system. Go to wakeid.wcpss.net and click on the Hurricanes logo to log in. Most students will know their login information, but if they need help, please contact your child's teacher. Detailed directions can be found here in English and Spanish.
* Students who achieve the goal of reading 20 minutes per day throughout the allotted time frame (for a total of 800 minutes) will receive two complimentary ticket vouchers to a Hurricanes home game.
The school-wide component of the challenge includes the tracking of books read collectively at the school site. This component will include the following:
* Schools that collectively read 2,020 books between Sept. 30th and Dec. 6th will be entered into a drawing by region to participate in a culminating event (the Cool School Field Trip) at PNC Arena during the school day in February.
* If your school is selected from the drawing to attend the Cool School Field Trip, students will have the opportunity to see a Hurricanes practice, participate in fun activities, and hear from Hurricanes players.
* Students will record the titles of every book they read along with their names on paper “pucks.” These “pucks” will be added to their school’s Hurricanes hockey goal banner. The goal is to collectively fill the banner with 2,020 pucks.
Thank you for your willingness to participate in the READvolution program! We appreciate this opportunity to build lifelong readers and learners in our community.

Positivity Project Character Strength of the Week: Integrity
People with integrity practice what they preach and maintain a consistent pattern of behavior aligned with their values. They have the courage not to follow the crowd if it means going against their beliefs. Integrity is closely aligned with the terms of honesty and authenticity. People with integrity tell the truth and have alignment in their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.
Why is integrity important? It is vital to individual growth and correlated with a multitude of psychological well-being measures. Harmony in your feelings, thoughts, and actions makes you better able to grow and achieve goals. Authenticity, and a lack of pretense, also makes you more likable and trusted by others. On a group level, integrity is a cornerstone of high-functioning and sustainable teams, organizations, and societies.

October is a month of new options for those looking for something different to try. National School Lunch week is October 14th-18th this year and to celebrate Child Nutrition Services (CNS) is offering new-to-us entree options. You may go on line through the WCPSS web site to see what days we will be offering spicy black bean burgers or veggie chow mein, and what would Wednesdays be like if we didn't offer a vegetarian nugget to go with our usual chicken nugget!

News from Cultural Arts
We’re excited to bring our first school wide performance to WES. Hot Horns will treat all our students October 16th. Featuring musical styles from different ages, including jazz and rock music, students will discover a variety of instruments whose unique features contribute to the sounds and rhythms of popular music over time. Hot Horns uses age-appropriate content and vocabulary for all musical examples and instrument descriptions. Some references to math, science, and cross-cultural connections are incorporated. Students are guaranteed to recognize the music, and will be singing along and dancing in their seats before the show is over. Ask your child about the show!
