Teacher Workday This Wednesday (10/9)

As a reminder, this Wednesday, October 9th is a teacher workday.  There is no school for students.

Readvolution is Back Again

For the third consecutive year, we will partner with the Carolina Hurricanes to bring READvolution to all of our elementary schools. This exciting partnership will support a community-wide literacy campaign around daily reading outside of school, plus allow students the chance to attend a Hurricanes game.

This year the READvolution time frame will be between Monday, September 30th - Friday, Nov. 22, 2019. Your child will be able to be part of this event by reading daily for 20 minutes!  (Students who have not started logging their books yet, can go back and enter them for last week.)

This year’s challenge features both individual and school-wide components, as well as goals for each.

The individual component will include the following:

* Through an online tracking system, students will provide the name of the book that they read and the number of minutes read each day. Students and parents can access their accounts through the Wakeid login system.  Go to wakeid.wcpss.net and click on the Hurricanes logo to log in.  Most students will know their login information, but if they need help, please contact your child's teacher.

* Students who achieve the goal of reading 20 minutes per day throughout the allotted time frame (for a total of 800 minutes) will receive two complimentary ticket vouchers to a Hurricanes home game.

The school-wide component of the challenge includes the tracking of books read collectively at the school site. This component will include the following:

* Schools that collectively read 2,020 books between Sept. 30th and Nov. 22nd will be entered into a drawing by region to participate in a culminating event (the Cool School Field Trip) at PNC Arena during the school day in February.

* If your school is selected from the drawing to attend the Cool School Field Trip, students will have the opportunity to see a Hurricanes practice, participate in fun activities, and hear from Hurricanes players.

* Students will record the titles of every book they read along with their names on paper “pucks.” These “pucks” will be added to their school’s Hurricanes hockey goal banner. The goal is to collectively fill the banner with 2,020 pucks.

Thank you for your willingness to participate in the READvolution program! We appreciate this opportunity to build lifelong readers and learners in our community.

Positivity Project: Other People Matter Mindset Week. Be Present

This week students will explore a mindset of being present rather than an individual character strength. This element of the Other People Matter Mindset (OPM2) means that when I’m with other people, I’m present and give them my full attention. A deliberate focus on being present is so important today due to the increasing number of distractions vying for our time and attention. Phone calls, text messages, emails, social media notifications all have the formidable capacity to pull us away from the present moment and what’s most important – our relationships with other people.

Just like plants need sunlight to grow, our relationships need attention. The research is clear, relationships are the cornerstone of health, happiness, and resilience. If we don’t give our attention to the people we’re building relationships with – whether family members or close friends- we can’t build those relationships.

News from Your Cafeteria:

October is a month of new options for those looking for something different to try. National School Lunch week is October 14th-18th this year and to celebrate Child Nutrition Services (CNS) is offering new-to-us entree options. You may go on line through the WCPSS web site to see what days we will be offering spicy black bean burgers or veggie chow mein, and what would Wednesdays be like if we didn't offer a vegetarian nugget to go with our usual chicken nugget!

WES PTA School of Excellence Survey

We need a few minutes of your time! As part of the process of becoming a School of Excellence, the National PTA requests feedback from families, administrators and teachers at two points in the school year—the beginning and the end. Your feedback will help us improve our family-school partnership and achieve excellence.

Please take 3-5 minutes to reflect on your experience at this school and complete the attached survey. This survey is completely anonymous. Please complete this by October 15th.

News from Cultural Arts

We’re excited to bring our first school wide performance to WES. Hot Horns will treat all our students October 16th.  Featuring musical styles from different ages, including jazz and rock music, students will discover a variety of instruments whose unique features contribute to the sounds and rhythms of popular music over time. Hot Horns uses age-appropriate content and vocabulary for all musical examples and instrument descriptions. Some references to math, science, and cross-cultural connections are incorporated. Students are guaranteed to recognize the music, and will be singing along and dancing in their seats before the show is over.  Ask your child about the show!

WES Backpack Buddies Food Drive

As we enter our 4th year of supporting this amazing program, we are looking for donations of specific food items to help support Weatherstone’s Backpack Buddies program. The Backpack Buddies program collects food donations that go home with students of need over the weekend and during school breaks so they have enough food to eat. This program only takes place during the school year, as there are resources that help them through the summer. The students in our program are identified by our school’s Social Worker and Guidance Counselors whom respect the privacy of the students and their families.

Items that go home in the backpacks include canned fruits/vegetables, canned meats/soups, juice boxes, shelf-stable milk, healthy snacks and breakfast foods. We also add fresh apples and oranges, along with vegetables from the WES edible garden. The food items collected are consistent with the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle Backpack Buddies program.

Included in our collection are extra snack donations for students that have been identified by teachers as consistently not having snacks. This is to ensure that all our students have a healthy snack to keep them going through the long school day.

Every parent, teacher and family can contribute to this growing and wonderful program at our school! Please sign up here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/30E0E4AA9AD28AB9-weatherstone

Any and all contributions make a difference! Donations can be left in the bin marked “PTA” in the front office, by the check in desk.

We thank you so much for your support!
