Positivity Project Character Strength: Teamwork/Citizenship

Teamwork is the ability and willingness to place overall group success as a higher priority than individual achievement. Citizenship is a willingness to work towards the common good as opposed to one’s own self-interest. This strength is associated with naturally positive feelings that accompany being a member of a family, team, school, political party, ethnic group, or country.

At home, you can teach your kids to promote unity through demonstrating that a successful household thrives because of everyone’s cooperation. Give children household chores, ask them to help their siblings or grandparents, and praise the moments when your kids make efforts to cooperate with others. Understand that working on a team isn’t always easy. Kids disagree and personalities clash. But it’s in the team setting where kids will learn valuable problem-solving skills and build defining character traits.
