September 11th Update

Hello Middle Creek families,

Happy Friday!  We have completed another awesome week of learning here at MCES.  Everyone appears to be getting into a routine and rhythm with remote learning.  We do realize that there are still some challenges being presented and we are working to find resolutions to them.  Thank you to those of you who have completed our parent survey related to remote learning up until this point.  We have had over 500 responses!  The data will be used to determine what changes we may need to make to our instructional programming/schedule to continue to serve you to the best of our ability.

This update provides a review of the information sent on Tuesday along with some new information about lunch socials our Guidance Department is offering for students.

Lunch Socials  - A message from Mrs. Fillard and Mrs. John

We will be hosting lunch socials over google meet the week of Sept. 14.  These groups are entirely optional.   The lunch socials have been planned for students to connect with students they were on the same track with last year that might not be in their class this year.  For new students to MCES, they are welcome to also join and meet some new friends! Encourage them to choose any group in their grade level.  These groups have been very popular with our students so we will be offering them as much as possible.  The meeting codes are available in the Counselor site on our main website and in your child’s Google Classroom.

All lunch socials will be from 12-12:30. The dates for each grade level are:

Monday - 5th Grade

Tuesday - 4th Grade

Wednesday - 3rd Grade

Thursday - 2nd Grade

Friday - 1st Grade

Dreambox is an instructional math program that is designed to meet your child where he/she is performing developmentally with math and prescribe a plan to ensure growth in areas needed.  In addition, classroom teachers can assignment specific standard assignments aligned with math standards being taught through classroom instruction.  Since the start of the school year, we have had several classes with over 80% of students logging on to DreamBox and even some with 100% participation. Those classes are:

At 100% participation: Mrs. Boylan, Mrs. K. Clark, Mrs. Grazen, Mrs. Lowe, Ms. McNeill, and Mrs. Winkler

At 80% participation or higher: Mrs. Cox, Mrs. Cancro, Mrs. Chalfont, Mr. Clark, Mrs. Coyne, Mrs. Ferreira, Mrs. Friend, Mrs. Gentle, Mrs. Hammond, Mrs. Hoover, Mrs. Howard, Mrs. Lewis, Mrs. Raub, Mrs. Slozak, Mrs. Spina, Mrs. Taylor, and Mrs. Whimper

Keep up the great work with Dreambox!

September 29 and 30 Remote Learning Days

September 29 and 30 are indicated as Remote Learning days on our school calendar.  On these days, students will receive all asynchronous assignments.  There will not be any live teaching on these days.  These are work days for our certified staff.   Classroom teachers will be available to answer any questions related to the assignments if needed.

iStation Assessments

Your child will take the iStation online Reading Assessment at some point during the month of September.  The iStation online Reading Assessment is a formative/diagnostic benchmark assessment that must be given three times a year to comply with Read to Achieve legislation. IStation assessments are not for grades- they are for informing instructional practices to better support reading growth and proficiency.  The assessment is adaptive; meaning it will adjust the questions to find the child’s reading proficiency level. Teachers will use this data to inform their reading instruction. Please do not assist your child on this assessment- teachers need accurate reading data to best support your child’s reading development. The assessment should not take longer than 45 minutes to complete.  If you find that it is taking your child longer, please contact the classroom teacher.

Joining the PTA

A message from the PTA: A new and in many ways unusual school year has started and an important part of the Middle Creek family is our PTA. Middle Creek's PTA supports critical academic needs and builds a stronger, more inclusive school community. We invite you to join because we can do more together than apart and your support is important to us. It only takes a couple of minutes to sign up at

Also, you can follow the PTA on Facebook (MiddleCreekPTA) and download the app in the App Store or Google Play (search for "Middle Creek Elementary") to stay informed.

General PTA Meeting

Our general PTA meeting will be on Thursday, September 17th at 6:30 p.m.  Our staff has prepared a presentation “A Parent’s Guide to Google Classroom” to share with parents.  A Google Meeting link will be shared with all MCES families on Thursday, September 17th.

Science/Social Studies: Until track out, students in Kindergarten through 4th grade will receive social studies and science instruction asynchronously.  The purpose of this minor shift is to reduce the number of log-on/log-offs for live instruction and allow you time to decide when your child will complete the assignments.  We will analyze our parent survey data to inform any changes related to our instructional schedule as we move into the 2nd quarter following track out.

Substitute Coverage

During Plan B transition, it is important for our students to maintain consistency with their learning.  When a classroom teacher is absent, we have a plan to ensure consistency with instructional delivery provided by the other teachers on the grade level.  Your student will have a Google meet code in their Google Classroom daily stream that they will go to on the day their teacher is absent.  This will provide your child with live instruction in order to complete any asynchronous assignments on that day.  When specialists are absent, they will provide asynchronous (pre-recorded) instruction for your child.  These lessons are accessed through Google Classroom.  Thank you for your patience and understanding while we navigate this shift in classroom coverage.

Thank you for your continued support of MCES and our wonderful staff.  Our teachers and instructional assistants are committed to providing the best for our students.  Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any additional questions. Please continue to stay well and have a wonderful weekend.
