August 21st Update

Good Afternoon MCES families! 


I hope this email finds you and your family well!  We have successfully completed our first week of school!  Here are a few updates for you! 


Meet the Teacher Parades!  We’ve heard our families request to see their teachers in person!  1st-5th grade families, please make plans to join us on August 28th from 8:30-9:30 a.m. to drive through the carpool lane to say hello to your teacher!  Our teachers cannot wait to see you from a distance!  You are encouraged to decorate your cars and show your MCES spirit!   Our Pre-K and Kindergarten students are invited to come at 2:00 p.m. for popsicles in the parking lot (drive through the carpool loop) to meet their teachers.  For both events, all families will remain in their car. 


School Supplies and Materials Distribution
Our student material distribution will be the week of August 24th.  Please plan to come to school during one of the following times to collect materials your child will need for the 1st nine weeks of school.  Our students will begin live math instruction this week.  Our teachers ask that you work to schedule your pick-up time around math instruction time if possible.  If not, we understand.  The student material pick-up dates/times are: 
Tuesday, August 25 - 8-10 a.m.and 12 -2 p.m. 
Wednesday, August 26 - 8-10 a.m., 12 -2 p.m., and 5-7 p.m.
Thursday, August 27 - 8-10 a.m. and 12 -2 p.m. 



Technology Distribution Update - A message from WCPSS: “We thank parents and students for their patience as we work to distribute the more than 44,000 Chromebooks and 13,000 hotspots that have been requested. If you requested a device, you will be notified of your assigned pick-up date as soon as possible, if you have not already. Thank you for understanding that we need to limit the number of people who are notified to ensure distribution sites can maintain social distancing. This is for the protection of families, staff and volunteers. “ 


Please read the following information found at carefully:
  • Those who indicated they needed devices in the recent device request survey will receive a notification via email when their devices are ready to be picked up.

  • Please wait until your assigned pick-up date before going to a distribution site to pick up your devices. 
  • If you go to a distribution site prior to your assigned date, there will not be any devices available for you.
  • You will be notified three days before your pick-up date. You can pick up any time on or after your pick-up date.
  • On or after your pick-up date, you will be able to pick up all of your requested devices for all of your students at the same time from any of the distribution sites.
  • The notification email will include information about distribution site locations, hours and pick-up procedures.
  • If you need devices but did not submit a survey response, please contact your school.

We thank everyone for their patience. It takes time to process the more than 50,000 requests for devices we received. We also need to limit the number of people who may be on a campus at one time so we can observe social distancing protocols for the protection of students, parents, staff and volunteers.

Orientation to Virtual Learning  

The orientation and virtual learning schedule for each grade level is available on our website at .    

As the district has shared with you, the first two weeks of school will include opportunities for teachers and families to connect, as well as for students to connect with each other. Teachers will use this time to share schedules, set procedures and routines, and ensure every student knows how to access assignments and materials. Teachers will provide a good foundation to maximize your child’s ability to engage appropriately with each other and their work during this time. 

You can expect academic work to start picking up the pace in the second week and beyond. By August 31st, we will be operating under a full day schedule for all students.  The schedule will include opportunities for live instruction throughout the day focusing on whole class instruction, small group instruction and specials (music, art, PE, media, and technology).  Please know that there will be much higher expectations in place for students than in place during the quick transition to remote learning at the end of last school year. Work will focus on covering standards the students missed at the end of last year, as well as new material for their current grade level. Attendance will be taken, and grades will be given. However, as we know that this type of learning is new for us, we will implement it in a way that will allow our students to grow into these new ways.
