The National Honor Society (NHS) is the nation’s premier organization established to recognize outstanding high school students. More than just an honor roll, NHS serves to recognize those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, service, leadership, and character. These characteristics have been associated with membership in the organization since its beginning in 1921.
Today, it is estimated that more than one million students participate in NHS activities. NHS chapters are found in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, many U.S. territories, and Canada. Chapter membership not only recognizes students for their accomplishments but challenges them to develop further through active involvement in school activities and community service.

Academics, community service, leadership and character are the four pillars of NHS membership. The academic qualification is a 3.5 unweighted GPA. On the application, students will provide information about their community service and leadership roles. The faculty committee that reviews these applications looks for leadership here at Sanderson High School. Student council, team captain, line or section leader in band or choir are examples of leadership roles. Essentially, students must show that they have been responsible for planning and organizing some activities and directing the work of others in that activity.
The committee will also look for an enduring commitment to community service. This may be something to consider over the summer! A single episode or once-yearly project typically does not satisfy this requirement. Ongoing service is the standard.
If the committee approves a student’s application, character evaluation forms are completed by all of the student’s teachers. If a student receives a consistently high rating from them, he/she will have met the final criteria for membership and will be tapped one day during class for a surprise celebration as well as receive a letter via mail. The Induction Ceremony is mandatory and is scheduled for October 22 at 6 pm.
National Art Honor Society
In 1978, the National Art Education Association began the NAHS program to inspire and recognize students who have shown an outstanding ability and interest in art. The program supports members in their efforts to attain the highest standards in art scholarship, character, and service, and to bring art education to the attention of the school and community.
National Technical Honor Society
The National Technical Honor Society currently serves approximately 100,000 active members and nearly a million members since its creation in 1984. NTHS strives to bring well deserved recognition, scholarship opportunities, and career opportunities to students who excel in one of the 108 career and technical educational fields as their profession. Not only do NTHS students embody all the attributes and talent which is in demand today, these students also embrace a clear vision for tomorrow’s workforce and their role in it.Thousands of schools and colleges throughout the U.S. and its territories have established a NTHS chapter on their campus. Member schools agree that NTHS encourages higher scholastic achievement, awards scholarships, and cultivates excellence in tomorrow's workforce. Education is a critical and integral element that advances economies, and NTHS forges positive relationships with high schools, technical institutions, and colleges to promote higher learning. To qualify for a NTHS membership you must have a 3.5 unweighted GPA, pass at least 3 CTE courses within the same pathway, and participate in a club that uses technology. To learn more about the Sanderson chapter, visit https://sandersonnths.weebly.com/.If you have any questions please contact Mr. Watkins at firstname.lastname@example.org.
