    Coming up this week:

It looks like it will be a quiet week at Oak Grove.  The weekends of January 18-20 and January 25-26, we are scheduled to have floorwork done on our entire school.  First, our tile surfaces will have a deep cleaning that involves stripping and waxing.  Then, the carpets will receive some much-needed attention.  It’s great to start the year with a clean school!

On Monday, January 20, students will not have school due to the holiday in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

    Visitor reminder:

In light of our focus on safety and protecting instructional time, please know that we may have to double check to make sure the teacher knows of your visit before you head down to the classroom.  It’s always a good idea to make arrangements with the teacher before you stop by.  We appreciate your help and support, as always, to keep Oak Grove safe.

    Carpool reminders:

In addition to keeping inside the building safe, we want to remind everyone to keep safety as a top priority when utilizing carpool.  Please always stay in a single-file line.  Never pass other cars unless instructed to do so by a staff member.  Please make sure your Otter is on the passenger side and ready to depart the car independently in the morning.  If you do not have your carpool tag, you will be asked to park and come inside.  Finally, carpool often ends no later than 4:00.  Please make every effort to be at Oak Grove by 4:00.  If you’re going to be late, please give Ms. Comstock a call in the office at 919-387-4490.  Our office closes at 4:30, so it’s important to be on time in the afternoon.

Hello, Oak Grove family! I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend!  It was great to welcome back Track 2 this week.  It is hard to believe we only have 5 days of school until the Winter Break.  If you came to our Otter Singers Concert on Thursday Night, I’m sure you got into the Holiday spirit! I want to thank Ms. Snider and all the students for their hard work and dedication.  We have some incredibly talented students, and Ms. Snider knows how to make them shine!

    Coming up this week:

On Tuesday, December 17, Student Assignment Strips will be sent home with Track 2, 3, and 4 students.  This information comes directly from Student Assignment.  Track 1 families will receive their Assignment Strips in the mail.

On Wednesday, December 18, we will have School Tours at 10:00 and 4:00.  If you know of any families that are interested in Oak Grove, please invite them to contact Ms. Dahlhoff to sign up for a tour.

On Friday, we will have our last day of school for 2019.  It is a Track-out Day for Track 4, and the end of Quarter 2 for Track 4.

If you haven’t’ already, please take some time to read the message below.  In January, we will begin checking to see if you have an appointment with a staff member if you are going to the classroom. This isn’t really new, but we wanted to have something clearly written:

In an effort to make the most of the instructional time, the Wake County Board of Education has adopted a policy to reduce interruptions during the regular classroom time. Students can learn best when announcements, unexpected visitors, and messages from the office do not interrupt instructional time. We need your help as we work to give your child the best possible learning experience.

Parents and members of the school community are always welcome at Oak Grove.  Please understand that our first priority must be student safety and learning.  Visits to classrooms and conferences with teachers should always be scheduled in advance so as not to disrupt the instructional program. If your visit to the classroom is not prearranged, you will have to get permission from the principal or assistant principal. Please do not disrupt classroom instruction to hold a parent conference. Teachers may schedule parent conferences during planning time or before and after the instructional day. If you need to talk to the teacher immediately, send a note with your child or send the teacher an email. Every effort will be taken to contact you as soon as possible.

Hello, Oak Grove family! I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend!  It was great to see our Otters on Saturday for our weather make-up day for Tracks 1, 3, & 4.  We said “Good-bye” to our Track 1 Friends until January 2.  On Monday, we will welcome back Track 2.  It is hard to believe we only have 10 days of school until the Winter Break.  I know our teachers are going to work hard to make every day count!

Please remember that this Friday, December 13, is the last day to submit your Science Fair Entry Form.

We have a couple of BIG “Thank-yous” to give to our amazing PTA.  On Tuesday, December 3, they put on an awesome STEAM Night.  I hope everyone was able to join us that evening for a fun event! Also, on Friday, the PTA Cultural Arts provided an assembly for our students called: Didgeridoo Down-Under Show. It was an amazing show.  I hope your Otter told you all about it!

Hello, Oak Grove family! I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend!  As you know, Monday, November 11, is Veterans Day.  We will not have school on MondayVeteran’s Day is very special to me and my family.  My father served in the US Army, and my brother-in-law is currently serving in the US Army, as well. My sister has been a military wife for the entire 25 years of her marriage, and her service is an important contribution to our country.

I have a few words to share in honor of Veterans Day:

Service before self: three words that define each person who has worn the uniform of our great nation.  Every Veteran has sacrificed, and we would like to thank you for that solemn commitment. To the families of those who have served, we recognize your sacrifice is great and your contribution to the service is unmatched.  We thank you, as well, for the families of all those who serve.

    Coming up this week:

Monday, November 11, we will not have school in honor of Veterans Day.

Tuesday, November 12, is track-in day for Track 3.  Welcome Back!! We missed you!

On Wednesday, November 13, we will be celebrating World Kindness Day.  Please wear blue or yellow to celebrate kindness.  We will also be having a Conscious Discipline Pep Rally that morning.  The times are: K-1 (9:30), 2-3 (10:00), and 4-5 (10:30).

Also, on Wednesday, our own Ms. Lara Hathaway will be featured on WRAL as the Teacher of the Week.  The segment is scheduled to air around 8:30 that morning.   We are so proud of Ms. Hathaway!

On Friday, November 15, our Track 3&4 Kindergarteners will have an in-house field trip with Science is Fun.  Also, our Track 1&4 4th Graders will make-up their field trip to the NC Museum of Natural Sciences in Raleigh that was supposed to happen in September.

On Saturday, November 16, we will be making up school for Tracks 1, 3, & 4 from September 5, when Hurricane Dorian caused school cancellation.  The school day on Saturday is 9:15-12:45, with arrival starting at 8:45.  We will serve breakfast that morning, but lunch will not be served.  I think most teachers are encouraging students to bring a healthy snack. The make-up day for September 6 will be Saturday, December 7, so please mark your calendar.

Finally, for our 5th grade families: you should have received a notice about Otter Wishes.  Please remember the deadline for these entries is December 6.  That is a solid deadline; no late entries will be taken.

As a staff, we have tried to collaborate on some consistent dates for Quarter 1 conferences/family engagement opportunities.  Although some teachers may go outside these windows, please look for your teacher to connect with you during the following dates:

    • Track 3: October 7-November 15
    • Track 4: November 4-15

Finally, for our 5th grade families: you should have received a notice about Otter Wishes.  Please remember the deadline for these entries is December 6.  That is a solid deadline; no late entries will be taken.

    Principal’s Otter Splash 10/25/19

Hello, Oak Grove family! I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend!  It’s hard to believe that we are ending October this week!  Please remember that Daylight Savings Time ends on Sunday, November 3.  Don’t forget to “Fall Back” next Saturday night!

Here’s a special note from Apex Leadership and the PTA:

We have the Apex team at school teaching the students leadership lessons like be a go-getter, appreciate, move forward, explore, put others first, and ask now what? Ask your child what leadership lesson they learned today! The Apex team is putting on a huge Fun Run event on Thursday, October 31 to celebrate everything they’ve learned in becoming a Game Changing Leader while helping their school!

Students are aiming to get pledges from 10 sponsors to help raise money for the school, and they are earning awards for their pledges. On average students complete between 26 – 36 laps with 36 laps being the most they can get credit for. So, if a pledge is made for $1 per laps, the donation should be around 30 dollars. To donate, please check out your student’s “Apex lanyard” that was sent home earlier this week. All instructions are inside. Just go to www.myapexevent.com and use your student’s special “access code” printed on their lanyard to log in and enter your pledges. If you cannot find your code, just email info@apexleadershipco.com. This helps the school and helps us keep track of pledges. Remember to Login your student’s shirt size online because every student will receive a free shirt on Fun Run day just for choosing their size online!

With Tracks 1 & 3 already making a strong impact on a successful fundraiser, we are so close to meeting our goal!

    Coming up this week:

Monday, October 28, through Wednesday, October 30, our Track 1&4 fifth graders will be going on a Field Trip to Betsy-Jeff Penn Center.

On Tuesday, October 29, PTA will be holding their monthly meeting at 4:15 in the Media Center.

Thursday, October 31, is Fun Run Day for Tracks 2&4. I will be sending a reminder text on Wednesday evening.

On Friday, November 1, our Track 2&4 4th graders will be going to Old Salem.  Also, on Friday, we will have in-house field trips for Kindergarten (Tracks 1&2) and First Grade (Tracks 1&2).

By Friday, November 1, students on Tracks 1&2 should have received Quarter 2 interim reports.

As a staff, we have tried to collaborate on some consistent dates for Quarter 1 conferences/family engagement opportunities.  Although some teachers may go outside these windows, please look for your teacher to connect with you during the following dates:

    • Track 1: October 7-25
    • Track 2: October 7-25
    • Track 3: October 7-November 15
    • Track 4: November 4-15
