    Principal’s Otter Splash 7/12/19

Hello, Oak Grove family! I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend. We had a terrific First Week of School for Tracks 1, 2, and 3!  We welcomed back all of our students that moved up a grade, and we had fun seeing all our new Otter Kindergarten students during their Staggered Entry week.  Thank you to the families that came to Track 1, 2, 3 Meet the Teacher on Monday, and Kindergarten Meet the Teacher on Friday.  It was wonderful to see you explore your new classrooms and meet our FABULOUS Otter Teachers.

As a reminder: the first day of school for Track 4 will be Monday, July 29.

For the first week of school, please try to limit the time going down to classrooms at the start of the school day. We understand the need to go down the first couple of days, especially if you are dropping off school supplies.  However, after that, please say “Goodbye” to your Otter at the bus stop, in the carpool line, or at the front of the school. If you are having a hard time separating, please reach out to Ms. Michot, our school counselor.  She is an expert at helping make the transition to school.

On Monday, July 15, the PTA will sponsor “Tea and Tissues” from 8:45-9:15.  This is the first day of school for all our Track 1, 2, and 3 Kindergarteners, and we want to welcome all of our new families.

Carpool ran a little bit slower at the beginning of the year on Tuesday, but by the end of the week we were finished with carpool around 4:00.  Please continue to be safe and patient in the carpool line.  Very soon, it will run as smoothly as it was in June.

Questions about transportation (carpool, bus or walk zone) can be sent to Mr. Mason, our Assistant Principal.

The first PTA Meeting of the Year is coming up soon.  Mark your calendar for Tuesday, July 30, at 4:15 in the Media Center.

Hello, Oak Grove family! I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend. Also, I hope you had a terrific time celebrating Independence Day.  I just love to watch an outdoor firework show!

It’s time to start the 19-20 school year, and out Otter Staff couldn’t be more excited!

Our first day of school for Tracks 1, 2, and 3 will be Tuesday, July 9.  We will have Meet the Teacher for Tracks 1, 2 and 3 (1st-5th grades) on Monday, July 8, from 12:30-2:00.  Please stop by any time during the window to see your new classroom and drop off your school supplies.  Kindergarten Staggered Entry will be July 9-11 for Tracks 1, 2, and 3.  July 12 will be Kindergarten Meet the Teacher from 1:30-3:00. The first day of school for Track 4 will be Monday, July 29.

On Tuesday, July 9, the PTA will be holding out next “Otter Family Fun” event.  The PTA will be at Ritter Playground from 4:00-5:00.  Please come out for some Oak Grove fun!  I hear there may be a sweet treat, also!

Carpool will run exactly as it did at the end of the 18-19 school year.  Please make sure your child is on the passenger side in the morning for drop off.  They should be unbuckled and ready to go when you get to the curb.  Please do not leave your vehicle to help them get out of the car.  We have adults and safety patrol to assist you and your child.  Finally, please do not pass in the carpool line unless you are directed to do so by Oak Grove Staff.  Most likely, carpool will run a little bit slower at the beginning of the year.  However, safety is always our top priority, so please be patient.

Bus information was sent to families by transportation over the past couple of weeks.  Mr. Mason and I will be working hard on the first day of school to get bus tags to our students.  Again, please be patient as the routes are established and drivers navigate through new traffic patterns.

Questions about transportation (carpool, bus or walk zone) can be sent to Mr. Mason, our Assistant Principal.

Finally, during our opening session, we reviewed several Wake County policies.  One policy of note involves social media.  While we are encouraging our staff to make connections through a professional social media account, we also are mandated to keep our personal accounts private.  Specifically, it is against WCPSS policy for a teacher to accept a “friend request” from a parent or student on their personal social media account.  Teachers love to build relationships with parents and students.  However, it is considered inappropriate, according to policy, for their personal account to be open to “friending” parents or students.  So, if that teacher does not accept your friend request…please know they are simply following policy. On the other hand, please make those connections through their professional accounts.  You’ll see some great Oak Grove happenings!

    Looking ahead to next week:

Track 2, 3, and 4, please mark your calendar for your upcoming End of Grade Testing.  The testing window is June 17-28.  Specific test dates are on the Oak Grove calendar on our website.  Here is the schedule:

Hello, Oak Grove family! I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend.  Hopefully you were not negatively impacted by those storms that rolled through on Friday night!  On the plus side, the teacher in me came out, and I was able to give my son a mini lesson on hail.

This week, Track 1 students will finish the 2018-2019 school year.  On Tuesday, June 4, we will celebrate our 5th graders as they move up to Middle School.  The festivities begin with a “clap-out” walk around the school at 9:45. Then, the promotion ceremony will begin at 10:00 in the multi-purpose room.  We look forward to this special time for 5th graders and their families.

    In other Otter news…

On Wednesday, June 5, Track 2 will return from the Track-out. Also on Wednesday, the PTA will be having their final meeting of the year at 4:15 in the Learning Commons.  Please join us for the meeting as we vote for your PTA Board.

Track 2, 3, and 4, please mark your calendar for your upcoming End of Grade Testing.  The testing window is June 17-28.  Specific test dates are on the Oak Grove calendar on our website.  I will be sending the dates out in an upcoming Splash, as well.

Hello, Oak Grove family! I hope everyone has a wonderful Memorial Day weekend.  Having a brother-in-law that is currently serving our country as a Colonel in the United States Army has made our family especially thankful during this weekend.  We take time to remember all who have served to provide our country with the freedom we so value.

This week, Track 1 students completed most of their End of Grade Testing.  We will still have some testing going on throughout this week. Please help us protect all the days during the last 10 days for Track 1 as testing may be going on in some part of our building.

    In other Otter news…

On Monday, May 27, we will be closed for the Memorial Day holiday.  We look forward to having all of our Otters back on Tuesday, May 28. On Thursday, May 30, we will hold a New Family Orientation from 6-7 in the Learning Commons.  If you are new to Oak Grove, please join us.

The PTA would like me to let everyone know that the Durham Bulls have added another redemption game for the Bullybusters tickets.  A couple of previous games were rained out.  So, they have added June 2nd to redeem your free ticket.  If you haven't headed out to a game yet, June 2nd might be a great time to go.  And...go BULLS!

As a reminder: the carpool lane is not a passing lane. Oh, my!!  We had to speak to a couple of our Otter parents this week that tried to pass.  Please don’t ever try to pass.  Please make sure you are following all the cars as they wind through the parking lot. We need to keep all of our Otters safe!  If you have an afternoon appointment, please plan to check your child out of school prior to 3:20.  Otherwise, please be patient.  We run carpool as quickly and safely as we can.

We have some busy weeks ahead as we begin the end of the 2018-2019 school year.  This week, Track 1 students will go into our End of Grade Testing window.  Parents, the best thing to do is make sure they get a good night’s sleep, have them eat a healthy breakfast, and remind them: YOU GOT THIS!

We are working on closing out the 18-19 school year while looking ahead to the 19-20 school year.  The administration team is making sure that any changes coming to Oak Grove are positive and support student success.  We do anticipate some changes due to a few factors.  However, we will remain consistent in our high level of student engagement, our quality staff and teachers, our positive school environment, and our safe learning community.  If you have questions about the upcoming school year, please don’t hesitate to reach out to Mr. Mason or me.  We are happy to answer questions, if we can, about next year.
