    Principal’s Otter Splash 3/15/2020

Hello, Oak Grove family!  As I write this, it is actually Sunday afternoon. I did not anticipate the turn of events that have happened in the past 24-48 hours. This worldwide pandemic of the COVID-19 has taken us into uncharted waters.

I hope you have been receiving updates from WCPSS. As I’m sure you know, Governor Cooper mandated by executive order the closing of all K-12 schools in the state of North Carolina.  In keeping with this order, Oak Grove will be closed Monday, March 16, 2020, until March 30, 2020, unless extended beyond that date. Our building will be open between the hours of noon and 5:00 PM on Tuesday, March 17, so staff and families can retrieve personal items. You are not required to come to school, and your child’s things will still be there when we return to normal operation. This is just an opportunity if something was left behind last week.

Please note, your child’s teacher may not be at school if/when you choose to stop by.  This is not a time to set up a conference with your child’s teacher or request materials. Also, you are not required to come get any instructional items.  Your child’s teacher may send you a message about routines and keeping skills sharp.  However, we all know that core instruction happens in the classroom with our amazing and talented teaching staff.  More information about optional supplemental materials that are not intended to be core instruction will be sent out from the district in the coming days.

Many families have questions about our students that rely on school meals as part of their daily needs.  Decisions about providing food for our students that experience food insecurity should be out in the coming days.  I know that there are many community resources already being made available above and beyond the school district's role in feeding children.

The PTA and Ollie Fest Committee made the decision late last week (before the executive order) to cancel Ollie Fest.  However, they have received auction items and classroom baskets.  So, that part of Ollie Fest will still take place.  However, the date will be TBD based on the newest turn of event

You may continue to receive communication from the district, as decisions are being made and, in some cases, adjusted daily.  If there is information that is specific to Oak Grove, I will be in touch.  If you have questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me.  If I don’t have the answer, I can try to get it for you. As a mom of a child in a Wake County Public School, I have questions and concerns.  I know these are unprecedented times, and I have a strong faith that helps me through the uncertainty.

Please stay safe, stay well, and take care of each other!

    Stephanie Bias, Principal

    Reminders

    • Executive Order closing school: March 16-March 30.
    • Ollie Fest has been cancelled.  On-line auction will happen at a later date.

Hello, Oak Grove family!  I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend!  Daylight Savings Time begins this weekend, so check your clocks to make sure they are set to the correct time!

Please remember that Monday, March 9, is a Teacher Workday.  Students will not be in school on Monday, but your teachers will be working hard to receive staff development and make preparations for a successful end of the year.

Ident-a-Kid System for Student Check In/Out: On Tuesday, March 10, we will begin using the computerized Ident-a-Kid System for late arrivals and early check-outs. This is the same computer you have already been using for visitor check-in.  The use of the computer system will allow us to have more accurate information.

Student Safety & Well-being Remains a Top Priority: Please know that I am monitoring the information concerning the coronavirus outbreak daily, and that our Otters’ safety and well-being remain a top priority. WCPSS is doing the same, and they are partnered with the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The official statement to families can be found at: https://www.wcpss.net/coronavirus and I encourage you to visit the page to learn more. The page is being updated as new information is being shared. Please know that best practices with regards to stomach bugs and influenza prevention also apply with the COVID-19 virus. Our Oak Grove staff has been reminded of the importance of student handwashing with soap and water. It is equally important that no one sends their child into school if he or she has an active fever (or has had one within the past 24 hours). Please let me know if you have questions, and I will do my best to find the answer.

    Coming up this week:

Sunday, March 8, from 6-8 is Oak Grove PTA Night at Triangle Rock Club.  When you receive this email, there will still be time for you to come out and join us for some fun rock climbing.

Monday, March 9, is a Teacher Workday.

Tuesday, March 10, is Track-in Day for Track 2!  Welcome Back!! We missed you!!

    Lost and Found!

Our Lost and Found is overflowing in the cafeteria.  With the weather changing so much every day, your child may come to school with a coat but forget to bring it home in the afternoon.  If you are missing something, it may be in our Lost & Found located in the cafeteria.

On Thursday, February 20, Oak Grove staff (including classroom teachers, specialists, intervention teachers, Instructional Assistants, and Brailists) received laptops as part of a county-wide rollout of devices.  They were given the Lenovo X1 Yoga. If you missed the original message that was sent several times in November and December, you can read it here:

If you haven’t’ already, please take some time to read the message below.  In January, we will begin checking to see if you have an appointment with a staff member if you are going to the classroom. This isn’t really new, but we wanted to have something clearly written:

In an effort to make the most of the instructional time, the Wake County Board of Education has adopted a policy to reduce interruptions during the regular classroom time. Students can learn best when announcements, unexpected visitors, and messages from the office do not interrupt instructional time. We need your help as we work to give your child the best possible learning experience.

Parents and members of the school community are always welcome at Oak Grove.  Please understand that our first priority must be student safety and learning.  Visits to classrooms and conferences with teachers should always be scheduled in advance so as not to disrupt the instructional program. If your visit to the classroom is not prearranged, you will have to get permission from the principal or assistant principal. Please do not disrupt classroom instruction to hold a parent conference. Teachers may schedule parent conferences during planning time or before and after the instructional day. If you need to talk to the teacher immediately, send a note with your child or send the teacher an email. Every effort will be taken to contact you as soon as possible.

    Carpool reminders:

In addition to keeping inside the building safe, we want to remind everyone to keep safety as a top priority when utilizing carpool.  Please always stay in a single-file line.  Never pass other cars unless instructed to do so by a staff member.  Please make sure your Otter is on the passenger side and ready to depart the car independently in the morning.  If you do not have your carpool tag, you will be asked to park and come inside.  Finally, carpool often ends no later than 4:00.  Please make every effort to be at Oak Grove by 4:00.  If you’re going to be late, please give Ms. Comstock a call in the office at 919-387-4490.  Our office closes at 4:30, so it’s important to be on time in the afternoon.

In light of our focus on safety and protecting instructional time, please know that we may have to double check to make sure the teacher knows of your visit before you head down to the classroom.  It’s always a good idea to make arrangements with the teacher before you stop by.  We appreciate your help and support, as always, to keep Oak Grove safe.
