School Threats

Making threats of any kind - including verbal threats, threats shared in private email or text messages or phone calls, threats written on school property, and threats posted to social media - are very serious offenses.

Anyone caught making a threat against a school, school staff members, and/or students could face criminal charges in addition to disciplinary action in accordance with WCPSS policy.

Families and students play a crucial role in preventing the spread of false rumors regarding school threats.

How to report a potential school threat

It’s important for students and families to avoid causing panic by spreading rumors of potential threats by sharing information with other students and parents.

Instead, if you hear about a potential threat, always use the following proper channels to report it.

Say Something

Anyone can report a threat using the Say Something Anonymous Reporting System.

The system enables anyone to report safety concerns anonymously to a multilingual crisis center that is staffed 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Each tip is immediately sent to designated school teams and, when necessary, to local 911 dispatchers, who then respond to protect student safety.

WCPSS Tip Line

Threats can also be reported to the WCPSS anonymous tip line at 919-856-1911.

You may also contact your school administrator directly to report a potential threat.

Threat investigations

Most hoax threats are just that - a hoax. They are intended to create fear and confusion in a school. The more public attention a threat receives, the more likely it is that we will see additional copycat threats.

Still, we take all reports of potential school threats seriously. As soon as a potential threat is reported, WCPSS Security, law enforcement, and school personnel conduct an investigation.

When students, staff, parents, and community members use the proper channels to report potential threats, we can ensure a thorough response by the appropriate authorities while discouraging copycat hoaxes.

Thank you for your continued cooperation in keeping our students and schools safe.
