My name is Crystal Catherwood. I am so excited to start my 11th year of teaching and my 1st year at Brier Creek! I grew up in Raleigh and Phoenix, and graduated from NC State with a Bachelor's in Elementary Education. I have previously worked at Combs Elementary, Cardinal Charter Academy, and Rogers Lane Elementary (all within Wake County). I have taught Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade, as well as reading intervention for K-4. I have also served as a licensing and mentor coordinator.
I enjoy being creative and steering students in directions that interest them. I also like finding opportunities to challenge my students and push them to grow to their potential. I have a strong background in differentiating and personalizing material for my students and cannot wait to see what amazing projects we can work on this year!
My husband and I recently relocated from Cary to the Brier Creek area. We have two dogs (German Shepherd/Doberman littermates): Zeus and Apollo, and we are licensed foster parents with hopes of adoption. I am ecstatic to work close to home and develop relationships with students and parents for years to come!
Mrs. Classen is excited to begin her second year of teaching 2nd grade at Brier Creek Elementary School. This will be her eighth year of teaching! Mrs. Classen was born and raised in Fayetteville, North Carolina. She graduated from East Carolina University with her Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education. After graduating, she spent four years teaching first grade in Cumberland County and two years teaching first grade in Forsyth County.
Mrs. Classen loves being part of the Brier Creek family because of the wonderful students and supportive community. Mrs. Classen believes her purpose is to create a learning environment where students feel safe and comfortable to be themselves and try new things while engaging in everlasting learning experiences. She uses many creative ideas to help her students learn and grow! She tailors her teaching to meet the needs of all students so that they will be successful. Mrs. Classen is looking forward to a school year full of new adventures with her second grade class!
Outside of school, Mrs. Classen enjoys spending time with her husband, Jamie, and her dog, Zooey. She also loves going to the beach, hiking, snowboarding, and spending time outdoors.
Kayla Cummings is excited to be joining the BCES Jets this year! This will be her 6th year teaching and her first year in second grade. She started her teaching career in first grade after she moved to NC six years ago. Ms. Cummings is originally from Syracuse, NY. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education: Grades 1-6 from SUNY Oswego in 2011. She is looking forward to growing both personally and professionally alongside the wonderful students, staff and parents of the Brier Creek community!
Ms. Cummings grew up the oldest of four children. She knew from a very early age that teaching was what she wanted to do. Working with and helping children has always been her passion. The best part about teaching is sharing in the curiousity and enthusiasm students have when they discover something new. Ms. Cummings feels her greatest strength as a teacher is her ability to connect with students on their level (she is still a kid at heart). This year she is most excited about learning new things right along with her students!
When she is not teaching or lesson planning, Ms. Cummings is busy being a “dog mom” to her 2 fur babies - Stasia and Charlie. They live with her and her fiancé, Thomas, in Raleigh. In her free time, Ms. Cummings likes working out, going to the beach, paddle boarding, visiting her family in NY, and watching football. Go Patriots!
