    Classroom Counseling Lesson 1st QT

    Introduction of your Middle School Counselor.

    I will share with the students a little about myself so they will be more comfortable during our interactions. The Power point presentation will include why they need me as a resource and how to make an appointment.

  • Welcome to Middle School

    Welcome DRMS 6th grade students!

    First Day - Monday August 1st

     

    What to Expect the first day

    • 6th grade students will start their morning in the gym. Any staff member will be glad to help you find the gym. No worries about getting lost. The 6th grade track 4 teachers will be greeting students in the gym.  Once all the students have arrived, teachers will walk students down to their assigned homeroom teacher.  
    • Schedules will be given out in Homeroom. 
    • Teachers will be reviewing all behavior expectations and procedures.
    • The students will be meeting the administrators.

          The teachers will be walking students from each class, to the gym, cafeteria, elective classes and finally the bus lot and carpool.

     

     

    I cannot wait to meet each one of you!

    Small Groups   Quarter 2/3rd quarter

    I am finishing up our lunch time groups.  

    Topic - Finding Balance in our lives- “Love, Power, Fun & Freedom”

    Based on Perry Good’s curriculum- Control Theory

    Activity- Students will complete a wheel of the four areas.

    The goals of this session-

    * For Students to understand that every behavior has a purpose, we are internally motivated and that we can only control what we do.

    * For discuss the areas the areas where they feel they have balance and others where they could use some more resources.

    ASCA National Standards:

    A:B 2.5 Use problem solving and decision making skills to assess progress toward educational goals.

    Classroom Counseling Lesson-  3rd QT

     

    Topic- Friendships and Cliques- March 16th 

    Students will gain insight into the nature of cliques and understand the benefits and drawbacks of clique membership. Students will learn how to deal with negative clique behavior, such as rejection and peer pressure.  Students will learn how to seek out positive alternatives to cliques.

    ASCA National Standard

    PS:A2.8- Learn how to make and keep friends.

    PS: C1.8- Learn how to cope with peer pressure.

    Classroom counseling lesson- 2nd QT

    Wednesday Nov 18th- Bullying prevention

     

     

    Bullying prevention lesson- I will be discussing some vocabulary words such a bullying, victim, empathy, taunting, relentless, and ethics.  The bully survey data will be shared during class.  It really gives purpose for the lesson.  We will discuss the effects of bullying, various scenarios and how to get help.

  • 6th grade small lunch group (Topic- Adjusting to Middle School)

    Small Groups 1st QT

    Topic – Transition to Middle School. Handout("Top 10 for Successful Middle School Transition")

     

    All 6th grade students will participate in a two small group meetings with me throughout their 6th grade year. 

    The purpose of these groups is to get to know the students and cover topics in our counseling curriculum. I will give out a Fast pass during homeroom to meet with me during their lunch. Students can bring their lunch from home or buy from cafeteria and bring it to Student Services.

      The goal of this session is for students to discuss their expectations of Middle School and what they will actually experience in terms of academic work load, social issues and personal issues. We will examine a self- management checklist.

      We have had a lot of great and interesting conversations about the ups and downs of starting Middle school.  I will have a makeup group prior to track out for student who may have been absent the day of their group.

    Top 10 for Successful Middle School Transition

     

    A smooth transition to Middle School will include a student’s ability to:

    *Transition between classes with minimal supervision.

    *Move around the school independently –AKA Be where you are suppose to be!

    *Ask for help from adults when needed and practice other self-advocacy skills.

    *Follow directions and take instruction from more than one adult.

    *Write assignments in an agenda (write down homework, projects, test dates, etc.)

    *Manage in the lunchroom with minimal supervision (stand in line, get a tray, pay for lunch, sit in designated area, put tray away, rejoin the group at a designated location).

    *Participate in PE class as required (changing into PE clothes/back to school clothes independently.)

    * Maintain and carry materials from class to class including books and notebooks. (No book bags are allowed during the day and desks will be used for multiple students throughout the day)

    *Follow a class schedule, arrive to class on time and remain in an assigned area for up to a 60 minute period.

    * Open a combination lock, visit with friends and access the bathroom between classes.

The power point presentation will include why they need a school counselor as a resource and how to make an appointment.  Students will take a needs survey to help me select topics from my counseling curriculum.

     Welcome 6th grade  Track 4 students!  
     
    Please report to the Gym Monday morning to start your day.  You will Meet your Teachers meet your 6th grade teachers and administrator there.  The 6th grade teachers will walk students to homerooms later in the morning
     We are looking forward to a fun day with you!
