    1/14-1/18

Our first full week of school in the new year has been fabulous. It has been great to see all of our students focused on truly committed to their learning this week. Please give them a pat on the back from all of us for the great week we had. We also want to congratulate our 8/1 students for leading all of DRMS in PowerPod totals. These are rewards given by staff members when students are demonstrating our proper PBIS DRMS behaviors and our 8/1 students are demonstrating fabulous behaviors within classes and hallway transitions. Thanks so much to all our students for modeling these excellent behaviors.

Students brought home their 2nd Quarter Report Cards on Friday 1/11. We ask that parents sign the cover letter and return it. If you have any questions regarding anything please let us know and we will be happy to help.

    Week of 1/7-1/11

Happy New Year 8/1 Families. It was so great to see our students come back rested and ready for new challenges in 2019. We wish everyone a safe and healthy new year as we continue to work together with our students to continue to prepare them for their futures.

2019 will be a big year of transition for our students as they prepare for high school. Mrs. Van Rensburg will be visiting the students' social studies classes in the coming weeks to prepare them for high school registration, and teachers will begin the recommendation process once we have all the information from the various high schools. The guidance department would like to invite all 8th grade families to a High School Registration Information Session on Wednesday January 16 at 6:30 p.m. This will be a good time for students and their families to gain information about high school requirements, the course recommendation process, registration process, and various other items that should make this transition an easy one for our students. We hope to see many of our 8/1 families at this meeting.

It's hard to believe that we are already at the end of the 2nd Quarter. Where has the time gone? First, we would like to take this time to thank all of our parent chaperones on our field trip on Thursday 11/29 to the NC Museum of History. The students seemed to really enjoy this and the trip could not have been a success without your help, so once again "Thanks". We would like to wish each and every one of our 8/1 students and their families a happy, safe, and joyous holiday season and at the same time a Happy New Year to you all. Due to next week being our last week prior to break we will not be sending home a weekly update until we are back in school on Jan 2, 2019.

Here are a few announcements for the upcoming week:

Students will have an opportunity to visit the book fair on Monday during their SS classes and have an opportunity to purchase items during Smart Block on Wednesday. Message from the PTA:

Wednesday, December 5, we will continue our DRMS tradition of providing teachers and staff with a goodie bag of homemade cookies. If you can make a batch of cookies and provide (at least) 3 dozen, we would appreciate it greatly. Cookies are due when the 8:15 a.m. bell rings on Wednesday, December 5, so that Santa's helpers can fill the bags and present them to the teachers! You can sign up here to help out and volunteer.

As part of our College & Career Ready Days, 8th grade/Tracks 1 & 2 will be participating in The Reality of Money on Friday, October 19.  (Tracks 3 & 4 will be participating at a later date).  Reality of Money is a financial simulation that is sponsored by SECU.  This event provides students an opportunity to make financial decisions about paying for housing, transportation, and other monthly expenses as they are "transformed" into young adults with jobs and other responsibilities to manage.  Students are exposed to various financial learning points such as the value of furthering their education, the importance of saving, the limiting effect of bad credit, and "living within their means".

In order for this event to be successful, we need volunteers.  Volunteers will be provided with training and all materials upon arrival for the event.  No experience is required.  Parents, grandparents, business community-all are welcome to volunteer.  Please go to the following link to sign up:  https://www.signupgenius.com/go/805054DAAA72B0-signup.

It's hard to believe we are down to 4 days of school until track out. The 1st Quarter seemed to move by in a hurry. It is imperative that students stay focused this entire week! Track out doesn’t start until 3:00 p.m Friday, and it is our expectation for them to work as hard as they can in each and every class to finish strong! We believe in all of them and appreciate the support of the parents and families!

Please see the following announcements regarding our upcoming week:

    • Monday September 3-No School (Labor Day)
    • Friday September 7-Track Out Day
    • Friday September 7-Welcome back Mrs.Bender!!!
