Bring Your Own Device at York Elementary School

York Elementary School is one of the pilot schools in Wake County that will be initiating a BYOD environment. Please use this website as a resource in understanding why and how BYOD will work at York Elementary School.

The BYOD initiative at York Elementary School involves all 4th & 5th grade students, teachers, parents and administrators working together to create the type of environment that will allow students to enhance critical thinking skills through collaboration with peers. We're looking forward to seeing creativity blossom as students develop stronger communication skills through engaging and challenging projects that will require the use of 21st century skills. It's not about the devices themselves, it's about embracing them as a tool for enhancing the great instructional practices already taking place.

Starting in the 2017-2018 school year our school, for the first time, will allow 4th & 5th grade students to bring their own technology devices (laptops, Nooks, tablets, iPads, smartphones, etc.) into the classroom. These devices are to be used at the discretion of individual teachers to enhance lessons and learning. Teachers will incorporate devices at appropriate points within their lessons to build ideas, enlist creativity, grant quick access to information/research, and allow students Internet access to develop knowledge and collaboration in the classroom.

**This initiative is a privilege for students, not a right.

***Students may only bring a device once parent/guardian has attended one of the informational sessions and signed off on the contract and paperwork.

    FAQ's about BYOD

What Type of Device Do I Need?

    • A tablet, Nook, iPad, laptop, smartphone, etc. that can access a wireless server. Today most devices have built in wireless cards, but older models may need to have an external wireless adapter.
    • A minimum of 1G memory in order to process materials found on the Internet. Dual processor level or higher.
    • An Internet Browser such as Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and/or Internet Explorer on your device.
    • There is no minimum requirement for storage, but please be aware that some class projects may require larger capacity. (flash drive, Dropbox, etc.)
    • If you don't have a device available, York Elementary School will make all efforts to give students access to the Internet through a school owned device/computer.
    • Students need to have permission to access the Internet. If a parent/guardian has previously signed a WCPSS document denying access to these than that student will not be able to participate. This is not something that can be changed at the school level. Changing of the student access status must be done at the county level.
