This fall, Mrs. Desimone's 4th grade class, and Mrs. Blanchard's third grade class, participated in our first Bucket Garden!
We gathered supplies (some donated and some purchased with gift cards) along with free seeds from Fairview Garden Center. The students were set up in teams and chose a team name and the vegetable to plant. Using food grade 5 gallon buckets, the students painted and labeled their buckets. Ms. Christiansen drilled drainage holes in the bottom of each bucket. On planting day, parent volunteers helped the students to plant carrots, lettuce, kale, and radishes. The students had to take care of their seedlings by watering as needed and monitoring their growth. We discovered that radishes grow really fast!
Each team enjoyed harvesting their bucket garden. All the children had an opportunity to taste the produce.
We look forward to planting more veggies in the spring, including peas and string beans.
