School Board
The Wake County Board of Education sets the vision and direction for the Wake County Public School System, supporting strong schools, student success, and a thriving community. As elected representatives, Board members work closely with families, educators, and leaders to shape policies that reflect our shared commitment to excellence, equity, and continuous improvement.
What the School Board Does
The Board of Education:
- Approves school policies that shape our students' daily experience.
- Hires and evaluates the superintendent.
- Adopts the district’s annual budget proposal.
- Advocates for local, state, and federal funding.
The superintendent and district staff carry out the board’s policies. The board does not have taxing authority.

Nine board members represent different areas of Wake County. Local voters elect each representative, who serves as a voice for students, families, and schools in their district.
