The Wake County Board of Education sets policy and makes decisions that guide our schools. If you’d like to share a compliment, voice your opinion about a board policy, or provide feedback on a board decision, you may contact your elected board member directly.

Your input helps board members understand the perspectives of the communities they represent. 

The Wake County Board of Education establishes policies that guide our schools and set districtwide standards. These policies cover areas such as governance, instruction, student services, and operations.

To review current policies, visit the School Board Policy Manual . You can search by keyword, browse by section, or explore policies by topic.

Staying informed about board policy helps families, staff, and community members understand how decisions are made and how schools are governed.

The Wake County Board of Education strives to resolve concerns and complaints of students and parents whenever possible. To this end, the Board has provided opportunities for students and parents to express their concerns through processes established in Board policies. Policy 1742/5060, Responding to Complaints, identifies these different processes, including a mechanism for resolving complaints in an informal manner.

While the Board encourages resolutions of complaints through informal means, it recognizes that, at times, a formal process may be necessary for certain types of complaints or if the informal process did not produce satisfactory results. This policy provides a complaint procedure that may be used as described below.

Any parent or student who has questions about the options for proceeding with a complaint or concern may contact the principal or Superintendent for further information and copies of all applicable Board policies.

If you have received a denial from WCPSS Transportation and wish to file an appeal, send your request in writing to:

Your written request must include:

• The specific transportation policy you believe was violated
• The outcome you are requesting

Once we receive and verify your request, we will contact you to schedule a telephone conference.

Note: Transportation staff are not available at this location. Appeals must be submitted in writing.

A parent may make their request in writing from the principal of the school in which their child is enrolled.

The public records of the Wake County Public School System are governed by the state of North Carolina’s Public Records Act, General Statute 132.

Procedures for handling public records requests

1. WCPSS will respond to public records requests whether the request is written or verbal.
2. WCPSS will acknowledge receipt of the request verbally or in writing. Requesters may be asked to put request in writing, however, if the requester declines, WCPSS will honor the verbal request.
3. If a WCPSS employee believes it would help to ensure the accuracy of the department’s response, the requester may be asked for the intended use of the information requested, but the requester is not obligated to give this information.
4. If a request is ambiguous or overly broad, WCPSS will give you an opportunity to revise the request and explain how the records are maintained and accessed by the department.
5. If the requested record contains information that is exempt, WCPSS will make available the portion of the record that is not exempt and clearly redact the exempt portion of the record.
6. If the request is denied in whole or in part (by redaction), WCPSS will provide the requester with an explanation of the denial, which includes the legal authority of the denial. If the original request was in writing, the explanation of the denial will also be in writing.
7. Documents will be prepared and made available for inspection. If the requester wants copies of the documents, WCPSS may respond by electronic mail or other means if the requester has no objection. 
8. WCPSS will respond to public records requests within a reasonable amount of time. What is a reasonable amount of time depends upon such factors as the extent of the request and physical location of the documents.

Examples Of Records Exempt From Disclosure Under The Public Records Act

• Confidential student data is not included; examples include references to the child’s health conditions, grades, IEPs or discipline issues
• Confidential employee information; examples include home address and date-of-birth.
• Attorney-client emails are excluded

How are the records collected? Requests for email records are collected from our computer email servers in an electronic format. Requests for non-email records are collected from electronic and hardcopy sources.

How are records redacted? If your record contains information that is not a public information, the non-public information will be redacted. Whenever possible, we try to redact electronically from electronic files. If this is not possible, the filed is printed out, and manually redacted with a black marker, then re-copied to ensure the information is not readable

What is redacted? The most commonly redacted data are the names of children, or information that could be used to identify them -- special needs of a student or disciplinary actions. Other items that could need redaction are employee data and items that are protected by attorney-client privilege

How long does it take to redact? Time needed for the redaction process can vary greatly, based on the number of documents in the request.

How will the request be provided? Whenever possible, we try to provide documents in an electronic format. 

Are public records requests themselves public records? Yes.

You can request transcripts and student records online. Some requests may include fees. The fee schedule is available when you begin your order. We do not provide duplicate diplomas. For security reasons, we cannot share student information, including student ID numbers, by phone. You must request records online or in person at Central Records.

To request a transcript of the professional learning credits you earned while working in WCPSS:

Please allow three business days for receipt of the transcript due to the volume of requests that we process.

• Email 'professionallearning@wcpss.net' and include your full name (first, middle, last) and the last school/department in which you worked before leaving WCPSS.
• Your transcript will be emailed to you.

• Take I-40 East, past the Airport exits and past the Wade Avenue exits
• Take Exit 293
• Immediately take Exit 293-A,
• Follow the highway to Walnut Street, Exit 101-A.
• At the top of the ramp, turn RIGHT at the traffic signal onto Walnut Street
• Go three more traffic signals and turn LEFT onto Dillard Drive
