High School Athletics:  High school athletics may begin shortly (potentially as early as June 15...stay tuned to the news, High School OT, and your high school's athletics website) and you need to have the necessary paperwork in order to participate, just like you did for middle school athletics. One page you will need in order to participate is a physical exam completed by a doctor. Miss Cicco has this page on file at school if you previously tried out for a sport at Durant this past school year, and can return it to you if you do not already have a copy of it yourself. Copies can be picked up on June 6th at Durant at the athletics tent in the bus lot, or copies can be sent directly to your high school's athletic trainer. Miss Cicco will only return valid physicals (physicals completed from 03/01/2019 and beyond). A physical dated prior to 03/01/2019 will not be accepted by your high school and will not be returned to you. In order to receive your physical exam page and to learn more about the necessary paperwork requirements, please carefully read the information here in this Pre-Participation Packet Information Google Form. This form will close at midnight on June 3rd to allow Miss Cicco time to retrieve, copy, and prepare all necessary papers for your retrieval on June 6th. If you have any questions about your physical or high school athletics, please email Miss Cicco (tcicco@wcpss.net)

Celebrations:  As we make plans to close out the 2019-2020 school year, we are also making plans to celebrate our students.  Your staff is collaborating and organizing virtual celebrations for each team/grade level.  Virtual end of the year celebrations will include event pictures, DRMS awards, Student of the Year, and messages from various staff members.  Please save the following dates:

    • 6th Grade - June 10, 2020 @ 9:20 AM
    • 7th Grade - June 10, 2020 @ 8:30 AM
    • 8th Grade - June 11, 2020 @ 9:20 AM

We look forward to celebrating a unique and successful school year as well as the hard work and perseverance of our students and their accomplishments.

Message from the PTA:  This week, the Wake County Public School System proposed moving Durant Road Middle School to a traditional calendar for the 2020-21 school year.  This proposal is due to a new state law changing next year’s school calendars due to COVID-19. Moving to traditional is a significant departure from the previously proposed calendar and would be a huge change for our school and our families. WCPSS has an online forum where parents can ask questions and express concerns.  Please click here to get to the forum and share your thoughts!

    Thank you for supporting DRMS,

    Kristen Faircloth

    DRMS' Principal Message

Hello Dolphins!  This is Kristen Faircloth, principal at Durant Road Middle School, with your May 17, 2020 Family Message.

We hope you had a wonderful weekend and are preparing for the upcoming week of virtual learning.  We continue to be impressed by both our staff and students during these challenging times.  Their perseverance and willingness to engage in meaningful activities during COVID-19 is to be commended.  Just this past week we saw over 50 seventh grade students participate in a virtual field trip at the Carolina Tiger Rescue, an increase of sixth grade students participate in the 6th Grade Sync-Up, and our morning announcements by eighth grade students continue to brighten our days.  Please encourage your child to finish the year strong and engage in their daily learning as well as the extra activities whenever possible.  Don't forget to stay in close contact with your child's teachers, visit their websites, and the Durant Road Middle School website often.  As always, please let us know if you have any questions or concerns.

DRMS Olympics Week:  This week the Elective Olympics will be taking place at Durant! The elective teachers have come together in the spirit of the Olympics to present a special week for you! Each day of the week a different elective team will have their Olympic themed lesson shared with all students. Monday is PE day, Tuesday is CTE day, Wednesday is Arts day, and Thursday is Spanish/ESL day. Students, all you need to do is log in to your electives' Google Classrooms/Canvas/Weebly like you normally would each day for lessons. Don't be alarmed if you see your band teacher posting a lesson from PE, or your Spanish teacher posting a lesson from CTE! You're in the right place and your teachers haven't gone crazy...yet! All elective teachers will be posting lessons from outside their discipline to ensure that you receive all 4 lessons. If you have any questions, please watch this screen castread this Olympic Week directions page, or ask one of your elective teachers. Have fun!!

DRMS Grading Updates:  This past week, WCPSS sent a message that outlined grading updates for the 3rd Quarter, 4th Quarter, and final grades.  You can find the full and summary guidelines in the following links.  Summary of Guidelines,  Full Guidelines  Final grades will be uploaded in PowerSchool by June 4, 2020.  Therefore, we are asking our Dolphins to do their best to have any work completed to improve their 3rd Quarter grade submitted by May 29, 2020.  If more time is needed, please communicate with your teacher.  Don't hesitate to reach-out with any questions or concerns.

Remote Learning Parent Survey:  WCPSS would like for families to provide feedback on their students’ remote learning experience so far. This will be the first of two surveys designed to gather information that will be used to help us improve remote learning for students.  Please complete the survey by May 20: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/N985N68

Closing Year Procedures:  With school abruptly ending in the middle of March due to COVID-19, DRMS students and staff still need to conduct some end-of-the-year closing procedures.  You will receive more detailed information in the coming weeks, but please put Saturday, June 6, 2020 on your calendar for the event.   While we will be sharing the specifics with you soon, the event will include:  dropping-off items (school-owned materials) and picking-up items (from lockers, student art work, PTSA fundraiser prizes, yearbooks).  Additionally, we will adhere to all COVID-19 safety procedures during this process.

Food Distribution Services:  In observance of Memorial Day, food distribution services will be canceled on Monday, May 25. Extra food will be distributed on Friday, May 22 for students and families for the holiday weekend. Most weekend food service sites will still operate on a normal schedule Memorial Day Weekend. Please make arrangements now to secure additional food for your family, if needed, on Memorial Day. You can view a list of sites, dates, and times at wcpss.net/food.

Thank you for being a part of the DRMS community,

    DRMS' Principal Message

Hello Dolphins!  This is Kristen Faircloth, principal at Durant Road Middle School, with your May 10, 2020 weekly family message.

We hope everyone has enjoyed this beautiful weekend and have taken time to celebrate all the Dolphin Mothers in the community.  Happy Mother's Day to all the amazing moms, aunts, grandmothers, teachers and other strong women that have such a positive impact on our students.  As we continue with week 4 of virtual learning at DRMS, we hope that your households stay balanced and healthy.  Please continue to support your child in completing academic tasks, take advantage of optional learning opportunities, and encourage them to communicate with teachers when questions arise.  We are all in this together!  This week, the district will provide families with updated grading information as we navigate the last month of school.  We wish you a wonderful week and please reach-out with any questions or concerns.

Building Access:  We were please to provide the opportunity for students to pick up items for continuous virtual learning as well as personal items on Saturday, May 9, 2020.  Thank you to everyone for following the health guidelines of social distancing and wearing masks.  It brought joy to our hearts to see so many smiling faces from a distance.  Saturday, June 6, 2020 has been designated for families to have access to the building, return WCPSS-owned items as well as pick up year books, etc.  Additional detailed information will be available in the coming weeks.

Medication Pick-Up:  If your student has medication at school, it can be picked up in Student Services on Saturday, June 6th (last names A-M from 1-2 pm; last names N-Z from 2-3 pm). Medication trained office staff will be available to assist you and social distancing precautions will be observed. If you are unable to pick up your student's medications on June 6, 2020, WCPSS Health Services is allowing us to hold medications at school due to COVID-19. No medications will be discarded and procedures for next school year will be shared with families as soon as they are made available to us.

Memorial Day Week Schedule:  Monday, May 25, 2020 is the Memorial Day holiday for WCPSS students and staff. We will not be conducting Virtual Learning on this day. DRMS will follow an amended schedule May 26-29 to ensure that all students have the opportunity to attend all classes and interact with all teachers. Grade level specific schedules will be sent to families in newsletters on May 22, 2020.

7th Grade Guest Speaker Opportunities:  We are excited to offer two upcoming guest speakers for all of our 7th grade Dolphins!  Any interested student should get the Google Meet link from their science teacher.

On Wednesday, May 13th from 2:00-3:00 p.m., the director of Carolina Tiger Rescue (based in Pittsboro, NC) will provide students with an inside look of their facility. The director will compare and contrast the human body systems to those of the tigers.

On Monday, May 18th from 2:00-3:00 p.m., a doctoral student will talk about her human anatomy and physiology research. She recently published a paper about how heart transplant patients recover. She will also provide students with information about how science and math are interconnected in understanding the human body.

Students will have the opportunity to ask questions during both opportunities. Please know that students are not required to attend these meetings nor do they have to stay the entire time. These are great opportunities for students to have interactions with professionals and these interactions may spark possible career interests!

Olympic Week:  Since this year was an Olympic year, we are bringing the Olympics to DRMS!  The Olympics are more than just the top athletes around the world competing in their respective disciplines.  The Olympics are about everyone coming together from around the world and unity.  The week of May 18, 2020 is Olympic Week at DRMS led by our elective team!  Check out this amazing video and get excited about the fun to come as we are all in this together:  https://youtu.be/_5LgFdjzXBk

PTA Message:  Thank you for showing our staff so much love during Staff Appreciation Week!  Your support means a lot - especially during this time when their contact with our kids is remote.

While we don’t quite know how the next school year will look, we are always in need of parent help and involvement so if you are interested in being on the PTA board or serving on any committees next year, please send a note to durantroadmiddlepta@gmail.com for more information on available opportunities. As always, thank you for supporting DRMS!

Continue to stay engaged and learning,

    Kristen Faircloth

    Principal

As we move into these final weeks of remote learning, we will offer two days for Durant Road Middle School to be open for students to retrieve/return items.

Saturday, May 9, 2020, will be a dedicated day for students to come in the building and empty out their lockers, including PE lockers.  Please note, Saturday, May 9th will be designated for students to pick-up personal items from the school.  A different day has been designated for students to return school-owned items.  Once students have cleaned out their lockers on the hallway, they will leave their lock (unlocked) on their locker.  Also, a cart will be posted at the end of each grade-level hallway for students to lay any books they no longer need (library books, EL books, etc.)  During this time, students will have an opportunity to pick-up their personal band instruments and/or medications.  We will be following social distancing guidelines, only allowing so many families in the hallway at a time.

Saturday, June 6, 2020, will be another dedicated day for families to come in the building and return WCPSS-owned items (i.e. band instruments, athletic uniforms, library books, EL books, etc.)  If our yearbooks arrive by the June 6th date, they will be available to pick-up as well.

To help us follow social distancing guidelines, we are asking only students and one parent or guardian to accompany.  We encourage anyone entering the building to wear face coverings and gloves.  Thank you for your understanding as we attempt to promote the safest environment for all.

Sixth Grade Sync-Up!:  We are so excited to announce a new Friday Google Meet opportunity for 6th graders called, Sixth Grade Sync-Up!  This is an optional activity for students to “sync-up” with their 6th Grade Administrator and School Counselor each Friday for 25 minutes.  The purpose of this meeting is to support students’ Social and Emotional learning skills during this time away from school. We think this will be a fun way for students to connect with us and each other, as well as provide students with an opportunity to express thoughts and feelings about the new remote learning style.  We will use a structured, discussion-based platform focused on building Self-Awareness and Social Awareness. Please share this exciting news with your student! Our first sync-up will be Friday, May 8, 2020.

Friday Book Club:  The media center is silent and public libraries are closed, but students are still reading!  The DRMS Learning Commons has created a virtual classroom space for students to talk about books, favorite characters, and challenges to reading right now.  Currently, students are participating in a musical bingo reading challenge, sharing book recommendations, and meeting virtually for a regional book club.  Any student wanting to join should email Ms. Aldridge (laldridge@wcpss.net) to be added to the Google classroom.  All Dolphins have access to digital materials through many sources including public libraries and NCWiseOwl.  Directions for navigating to these ebooks and audiobooks along with other ideas to support readers can be found on the Learning Commons website and Youtube channel.

Friday Art Club:  Hi Creative Dolphins!  Art is doing an optional art making hangout each week that is an open invite. If you want to join, email Ms. Mercer (cmercer@wcpss.net) to receive the google meet information.  Students have had the opportunity to make really fun condiment paintings in the style of brazilian artist Vik Munoz!

NC4Sports Campaign:  What do sports mean to you?  To us they mean everything.  Sports teach us about life, love, heartbreak, happiness, pain, and grief.  They teach us how to be a part of a team.  They teach us to give everything we have until the very end. And most importantly – Sports bring our communities together.

Sports are needed now more than ever.  We know they will return.  But when?  Sports have been a part of our business here at Johnson Lambe for the last 85 years. They have given us the opportunity to build so many great relationships across the state and provide the best customer service and experience that we can.

Just like you, we can’t wait until sports return, not only around the world, but especially here in North Carolina.  And we know when they do our schools will need help.

For that reason, us here at Johnson Lambe have created this campaign - #NC4Sports.

Each year our schools rely on sponsorships and donations from local businesses, families, and the community to fund their athletic department.  This year we know that money might not be there as we all deal with the fallout of this global pandemic.

For each bundle sold, Johnson Lambe will give back half of the money spent to the school of your choosing.  Whether it be the school you went to growing up, the school your kids or grandkids go to, the school you love to go watch on Friday nights, or your crosstown rival who you know needs a little help. All you have to do is enter the full name of the school you want to support in the specified line at the end of your order.

To make things even better, the school who raises the most money for their athletic department in each classification (4A, 3A, 2A, 1A and Middle School) will win a bonus credit with Johnson Lambe.

Orders will be accepted through May 31st with totals being tallied Monday, June 1st.  For any questions please reach out to sales@johnsonlambe.net

Thank you for your support as we all get through this together.
