Mrs. Laura O'Brien

Mrs. O'Brien was born and raised in Virginia. She attended East Carolina University and received her degree in Special Education.  For the last 25 years, she has taught preschool, elementary and middle school Special Education. She knew from a very young age that she wanted to teach and help others be the best they can be. She has been volunteering with the Special Olympics since high school and attended the World Special Olympics. It was there that she realized how much she loved learning about other countries and their cultures.  She has traveled to Mexico, Bahamas, London, Paris, Switzerland and Rome.

Mrs. O'Brien loves being part of the Wiley family because the school is such a tight community. The magnet International/Global theme helps her expose her class and herself to so many different cultures through projects, assemblies and electives. Wiley is such a positive and caring place where the teachers and students build relationships together that helps foster learning.

Mrs. O'Brien links her work at Wiley with 2030 United Nations Global Goals for Sustainable Development goal #4, Quality Education.  The goal states, by 2030, all girls and boys will "complete free, equitable and quality primary and secondary education leading to relevant and effective learning outcomes."   Being a Special Educator, she feels that ALL girls and boys should get a quality education, no matter their academic level, their socio economic status, their religion, their gender or their race. She wants to instill in her students work ethics, responsibility, determination, and the commitment to help others. She believes in making a difference in our world.

In her spare time, she loves to spend time with family and friends. She is married and has 2 daughters and a son. Whenever she can, she likes to travel with her family and loves the beach. She stays very busy watching her son play high school and travel baseball. She can also be found at the dance studio working and watching her daughter dance. This year she will enjoy watching her Pirates play football even more because she will get to tailgate and see her daughter who attends ECU. Family and friends are very important to Mrs. O'Brien at home and at Wiley.
