I grew up in Sampson County and graduated from NC State University in 2005 with a Bachelor's Degree in Interpersonal Communication. I completed the  K-5 teaching licensure program at Meredith College in December 2005. I began my teaching career at West Lake Elementary as a kindergarten teacher in 2006. I received my National Board Certification in 2011.  In 2015 I began teaching first grade at West Lake Elementary. In 2018 I transitioned to Buckhorn Creek Elementary as a first grade teacher.

When I am not at school, I enjoy spending time with my family.  Becoming a parent gave me new lenses as an educator. I appreciate and understand a parents perspective and use that knowledge to build relationships with both my students and parents.

I am excited about becoming a Buccaneer!  A little about me: In 1999, I received my BA from Ripon College (WI) in French and Spanish.  I then moved to Boston to begin work as an Americorps*VISTA volunteer with ReadBoston in Boston Public Schools. It was through that that I realized how much I missed working with children, so in 2002, I moved to begin my M.Ed at Loyola University-Chicago.  In 2004, I began teaching with Chicago Public Schools, teaching 2nd and 3rd grades.

After the birth of my sweet daughter in 2009, I decided it was time to move closer to my Oma (grandmother) in NC -- so my family and I traveled to NC, fell in love with Wake County, and made the move in 2012.  I joined WCPSS that year, teaching Spanish K-3, but mostly 1st grade. I enjoy reading, exploring NC, and spending time with my lively children (on 01/01/15, we added our energetic son to our family!). I look forward to learning with your children, exploring the world and deepening the love of reading -- as well as working with you to ensure a wonderful school year for your child!

My name is Joleen Haynes and I am so excited to be joining the Buckhorn Creek Family!

I earned my Bachelor's degree from Illinois State University. After graduation, I spent several years in Corporate America working in the Learning and Development field as a Corporate Trainer. In 2008, I transitioned from teaching adults to nurturing young minds and began working for the Menomonee Falls School District in Wisconsin. I loved working with students so much that I began pursuing a Teaching Certification. In 2015, my family relocated to Apex, North Carolina where I have been substitute teaching for Wake County for the last 4 years. I am excited to be in the classroom full time again.

As an elementary educator, my focus is on creating a positive and productive learning environment. My goal is to create an engaging 21st-century classroom for students and families. I look forward to watching my students grow throughout the school year.

Outside the classroom I enjoy spending time with my three children. I have two daughters and a son. We just welcomed a pet fish into our home named Teacher. I also enjoy reading, movies and listening to a variety of podcast.
